I’m sure he’s well aware Afro-Latinx exist. As you said he loves playing devil’s advocate ... ofttimes to an annoying degree. I think he probably pushing the discussion because let’s be honest, a lot of Afro Latina’s do not acknowledge their blackness. And she laid it out there for anyone who has questions.

Remember the Scrubs musical with Carla’s “I’m Dominican” song? She would also insist that she was not black.

It is fantastic though to hear a current celeb on a hit show not only acknowledge it, but pretty much check CTG (and anyone else listening) for being dismissive of her heritage.

Take the same Zoe Saldana for instance. She did not always acknowledge her blackness, but now she does. No judgement from me on this, it’s one of those things, you can’t take it back once you’ve uttered it. Even if she did it for the Nina part, it’s out there and no take backs.

Jesus forgive me, but I still sometimes sing “Turk, I’m Dominican!”

      I am so very white.

(I also like to say, under my breath, my favorite Chris Turk line: “Sir, do you really think my name is Turk Turkelson?” Ah, Scrubs. So much fun.)

A few years ago I worked in a store with a lovely Puerto Rican girl who happened to have similar features to me (same complexion(real brown), similar hair type (real kinky)) swear up and down that she was not “black” nor afro-descendant in any way. She claimed to be too light to be black. Keep in mind, WE ARE THE SAME COMPLEXION. Had I, as an obvious negro (with similar features), tried that.... I’d be shamed into oblivion. It’s amazing what people will do to distance themselves from having an African descendant somewhere in the family tree. IT’S NOT THAT BAD- I PROMISE!

Where are all the people chiming in to talk about colorism and how Afro-Latinas like Polanco and Zoe Saldana don’t have it as bad as black women with Nina Simone’s features?

There’s a reason why, on demographic surveys, are you Latino/a is a different question than the one that asks what your race is.

I’m Latina (Mexican-American) and never know which race box to check. I don’t look white or Native American or black. I’m café-au-lait colored with freckles, very dark brown hair and eyes, and a “Roman” schnoz. Anyone else in this boat? Please advise, smart people of Jezebel.

Yeep, European enslavers just totally dropped Africans off on one side of the island and inexplicably ignored the other side right at the imaginary line separating Haiti and the DR before that imaginary line existed.

I worked with international students when I was in college and would get such crap from my non-international students when I would ask the international ones where they were from. They automatically assumed that I was being racist, but I literally wanted to know which country they were traveling from to go to college. Because, ya know, part of my job was to link up people from the same foreign country.

International students are generally quite ok being asked “where are you from, really?”. This is only a problematic question if you are asking an American.

It’s interesting to note that of all the humanity that was transported to the New World from Africa, it's estimated that only about 20% came to the United States (and the preceding “colonies”). The remaining 80% ended up in the Caribbean, South America, Mexico, and Central America.
