You would think that law enforcement would back her up on this, considering the wasted resources that go into a “swatting”. What does it cost, I wonder, to get a team together in the middle of the night for such an event? Especially because I feel like it has to be the same group making the calls, over and over.

Also, how is it possible that posting nudes you don’t have permission to post is still legal? Like, I genuinely don’t understand.

There’s a special place in hell for scumbags who share/post/pass around pics or video intended just for them.

Fun fact: I recently learned that the original meaning of “scumbag” was basically “a condom” or whatever the polite term in the 18th-19th century for it was. I find this to be both hilarious and disgusting. B/c I am forever 12 y.o.

$20 million? Like, for the entire country?

I applaud the intent and I’m sure the amount is part of the strategy for actually getting it approved but... uh... seems kinda low, no?

      It’s just a start.

And sad to say, my guess is that 20 million is overestimating the amount of resources that will be needed to meet the demands from local law enforcement as I’m assuming they will mostly ignore it. Or they’ll just misappropriate the grant money.

      I hope I’m wrong though...

Wow. $20 million? $20 whole million?!?!? Why that, and a few billion dollars and you have a few billion dollars. That’s like 5 minutes of pay for the graduating CS&E class at Stanford University.

So, I’m not an expert on these things and I fully support the spirit of this bill, but how much will 20 million actually get done? That seems like a pretty tiny amount of money to confront a large problem, although it’s a good first step, I guess.

I’m pretty sure that while she fully intends to fight against crimes like cyber stalking, harassment, etc. (and rightfully so) this will get amended to hell and basically just try to ban encryption on phones.

Isn’t “swatting” already illegal? I’m pretty sure it’s an offense pretty much everywhere to call in a false 911 report. Or is this making it a federal offense where it crosses state lines?

Apparently the federal law only specifically forbids bomb threat or terrorist (whatever that word means in this context) hoaxes. According to her press release, “The Interstate Swatting Hoax Act would close this loophole by prohibiting the use of the interstate telecommunications system to knowingly transmit false information with the intent to cause an emergency law enforcement response.”
