I haven’t read the article. I don’t want to. The headline is shocking enough. I am very conflicted because I want America to do something about it, at the same time I do not want to send young men to die in the middle east. It is painful to say this but maybe we can’t fix the world (and yes I am aware that we have enough problems going on at home). Perhaps as much as it pains me to think it we can’t do much more than encourage cultural changes in those countries when/if they start from within.

I believe Malala Yusafsai was entirely correct when she told Obama that investing in education for girls would have been far more of an efficient method of combating terrorism than the drone program, or the support of rival fighter groups. Preventative or restorative investments in civil society and infrastructure are more efficient and humane, and I believe would be more effective. I don’t know how this is achievable once civil war breaks out.

There are great statistics on the education of women and better well-being outcomes. All of those scenarios assume a little bit of culturally granted agency. I can’t imagine how education would have helped the these women.

This makes me sick to read. ISIS needs to be stopped. Not “by any means necessary” because that would reduce us to their level, but with all the resources that we have.

Can I just say this is the weirdest fucking news story? Being a sex slave is awful. Awfuuuuuuullllllll. But somehow that’s not enough and the nyt (and jez) has to sell it with.... “and sex slaves are forced to take birth control!!!”

      Wat?

I get its a hook to make us realize how very objectified these women are, but you know what? Being sold seven times underlines that more effectively. As for the birth control, I was actually happy that most of those women and girls won’t become pregnant.

I never really understood this argument in a general sense. “STOP THEM! Oh, but don’t be so mean about it.”

I can’t even see this story on Jezz. I just can’t.

I just got over my period, so why I’m so emotional over this is kinda weird (cause I’m a tough old broad, I’ve seen a lot and heard a lot in my time), but this is just...I just...I just can’t today.

Ugh ok I’m sick of seeing the same comments over and over again. I’m going to get an earful for this, but...

To all of you all that blame the violence of the Islamic State on Islam itself:

That is simply not the case. Islam is, for the most part, and like all other prominent belief systems, inherently peaceful. It only becomes violent when extremists bastardize core religious values and distort religious teachings for their own purposes. Again, this is the case for ALL belief systems. There are even Buddhist monks (yep, BUDDHIST) in Myanmar today that practice systemic violence against Muslims.

If you still don’t believe that certain portions of Christianity could ever be as violent as the Islamic State is now, I suggest reading a history lesson on the Crusades or the Spanish Inquisition. Or slavery in the US (it was justified by white Christians because they believed themselves to be the “chosen ones” as Israelites and were therefore entitled to own slaves). Or hell, the hate crimes that STILL happen today against LGBT people, women, PoC, other religious folks, etc. in the name of Jesus Christ.

Problem is, a lot of the so-called moderate Muslims aren’t doing enough to stop the radicals. Not to mention, even the moderates seem to hold pretty regressive views (regarding such things like apostasy, homosexuality, gender equality, etc.) and are pretty vehement about holding on to those views. When I see polls such as ones that say 84% of Egyptian Muslims believe apostasy should be punished by death, or 87% of Pakistanis don’t believe homosexuality should be accepted by society, what else am I supposed to think? All I can think is, these are some backward-ass people, following a backward-ass religious text.

I read the NYT story. It stated that several ISIS fighters didn’t even know the Quran and had to be taught the rules for engaging in the sexual abuse of these women. It just shows that these people are MINOs (Muslims in Name Only) and not actually practitioners of the faith. Several other outlets have reported the same thing on different occasions. Any holy text can be bent and distorted until it fits ones desired narrative. Like the saying goes, even the devil can cite scripture.

I feel like somehow the Republicans will turn this into another reason to try to keep women from obtaining contraception — OH, YOU WANT THE ISIS PILLS, HUH??

I’m now waiting for those same Republicans to proclaim Planned Parenthood the ISIS of American promulgating sexual slavery here. Unless they’ve already done that and I missed it.

It’s an interesting angle of attack: cutting off their supply of contraceptives. The US and others have been extraordinarily effective at cutting off ISIS’s access to banking. If they could cut off their access to pharmaceuticals like contraception, it would be huge. And presumably they cannot be manufactured in areas under Sharia law...or can they?
