Inexplicable is right. It’s just baffling. She didn’t have to mention the Reagans at all in connection with HIV!

I cannot fathom what possibly would have led to her making that comment when it is so obviously wrong.

Is she trying to appeal to, like, moderate Republicans? I just can’t imagine why anyone would mention Reagan and HIV activism/awareness in the same sentence.

Yeah. It’s just mindboggling. Like, why not just keep it to the standard platitudes? Why even utter “Reagan” and “HIV” in the same sentence? Not only were her comments so utterly wrong—as in, the exact opposite of the truth—and completely fucking offensive on top of that, but as you said, she didn’t have to mention that shit at all. There’s no reason why her comments needed to go there.

But hey, I’m waiting for the Clinton supporters to rationalize the shit out of this, just like they did with her half-step on abortion at the Fox town hall (Sanders, by the way, answered the abortion question by saying he’s unequivocally in favor of women 100% controlling their own bodies, no matter what the situation), and just like they have on her adoration of Kissinger, and apparent/implied support for the Contras during the Nicaraguan Revolution. I swear, these establishment motherfuckers are turning erstwhile progressives more and more into Republicans with each passing second.

Yeah, so I’m just gonna leave this fucking video right here:

Hillary Clinton is a fucking joke, and these statements should hurt her big-time, but of course, they fucking won’t. Because “inevitability.”

I don’t know if it’s ‘inevitability’ more than the fact that there are large swaths of the population that have seemingly given her a lifetime pass for some reason and will support and vote for her no matter what. Oh well.

imo, this is just simple pandering by her. She’s the assumed Democratic nominee, and she’s preemptively pandering to moderates and the right by praising Reagan. For someone who insanely calls herself ‘not a natural politician’ (minutes after panderingly telling the largely hispanic crowd at the debate that she ‘told Wall Street to basta!’), she sure has the playbook of one. Pander, deflect, ingratiate, lie, whatever. It’s all a rich tapestry.

She’s aleady moving right and Kissing Reagan’s ass because she wants to woo Republican voters. Apparently they’re more important to her than actual leftist votes. No matter how repugnantly she acts, leftists get lectured for not wanting to vote for her... It’s good her her that I live in a very blue state, because she no longer has my vote.

This is the same Hillary Clinton who back in the 90's said that black youth were super-predators who had no conscience and “must be brought to heel” and now she’s reinvented herself as a civil rights icon. Not a surprise she’d so the same for Nancy “blowjob queen” Reagan. Lying hypocrites always got each others backs.

Incredibly disappointing. As a gay man and Clinton supporter, I honestly don’t know what to say. She should have not said anything - I don’t get what on earth she’s talking about here.

You need to rethink your support then. Honestly, this was probably the most offensive, incredulous thing she could have said. She just virtually spit on the graves of tens of thousands of gay and straight Americans, and praised one of the people who was in position to help but did nothing to try and stop it.

I lost an uncle in 93 and my uncle in-law in 2007, the later of whom told me first hand how disastrous Regean and his ilk were for people dealing with this disease. For her to misrepresent the past this way is unbelievable.

I know you might not believe that Sanders is the better candidate, but he cannot be worse then what she just did on national tv.

Anyone who whitewashes the Reagan’s AIDS legacy just to pander to the few Reagan Democrats left who are still alive deserves to have her coronation nomination stolen, twice.

I do kind of think that just like how Republicans like to re-write history on race (we were the party of Lincoln! MLK would be a Republican if he were alive today!), soon they will be re-writing history on LGBT issues. This is just Hillary giving them a bit of a head-start.

    Let me help you out.

A PBC documentary aired a couple of years ago cited historian Allida Black, who said Mrs. Reagan’s friendship with some AIDS victims prompted her to encourage her husband to seek more funding for AIDS research.

Ronny R. apparently disagreed with his wife on the need to look into AIDS much, but Black claims she tried to push for it “behind the scenes.”

“I think she deserves credit for opening up the AIDS money,” Black told PBS. “But I could never say that without saying they never would have waited this long if it was redheaded sixth graders.”

... I can only assume this is what Hillary was trying to refer to. It ain’t much but it’s there.

This surprises anyone? She already rewrote history in defense of Reagan-era foreign policy at the Miami debate, now she’s making him a hero of the AIDS epidemic. She will say almost anything to court conservatives, from pretending to give a shit about whether marriage is between a man and a woman, to calling the deaths of Syrian Christians a “genocide” (because the Muslims being killed alongside them don’t really count). In doing this, she cynically validates and gives aid and comfort to a mindset she doesn’t actually share, but believes she can manipulate to her benefit, much as she did in 2008 when she referred to “hard-working Americans, white Americans”. But please, tell me more about her awesome progressivism.

The reagans HIV/AIDS advocacy was so low key in the 1980's it was non-existent. I mean unless you can call placing travel and immigration bans that weren’t lifted for like 20 years advocacy. Go reagans!

Yes. Honestly we met A few really really awesome people when my uncles were dying, but the majority of the people we dealt with were really horrible. Especially the people who should have known better. Doctors and nurses and mortuaries. Doctors and nurses would often voice their disgust at having to work in the “Plague Ward” as they walked past people who were obviously there to visit friends or family in that Ward specifically because they had HIV/AIDS as it was a dedicated Ward ( they couldn’t risk any of those bedridden patients infecting anybody else in the hospital by telepathy or osmosis now could they) they would treat patients as if they had made some kind of concious choice to contract this virus and suffer this really horrible death sentence instead of having what amounted to a simple human experience which is to become ill from a while living the course of their lives, as often happens, and die from that illness

because at the time most funeral homes wouldn’t accept the bodies of AIDS patients at all, the few that did would radically overcharge to cremate them (burying to my knowledge was so rare I never heard of it happening with or without embalming) . So families sometimes couldn’t afford to have their loved ones tended to after death.

The atmosphere of fear and prejudice was so incredibly oppressive that it was as if the entire world actively wished all the individuals who had HIV/AIDS would just hurry up and die so that the virus would die with them and they could just save themselves the bother of actually doing anything about it. A great deal of that prejudice existed because specifically statistically the people dying from HIV/ AIDS happened to come mostly from populations that the conservative body who made up both the majority and the seat of power that created the laws within North America as a whole therefore setting the tone, didn’t care about if not actively wished harm to
