That’s a lot of letters. If only there were some shorter word that could be used in its place, like...five, maybe even four letters long.

That was my reaction as well. How is “nonconsensual sex” different from rape? Oh, it’s not? Right, let’s call it what it is. JFC.

This is minor, but I have seen the detail about the shirts having “Yale spelled backwards” on them in a few pieces and...is that significant somehow? It’s included in a number of articles and I feel like...I’m missing something. Can someone enlighten me? Is this some sort of Yale-inside-joke? Does Elay have a significance I don’t understand?

The explanation provided is that the team wanted to write Yale, but didn’t want to violate licensing or copyright agreements so ELAY was the best they could do.

“Yale” is trademarked, so you have to get permission to put it on a shirt. having it spelled backwards means the university didn’t approve them.

The victim here has chosen not to speak, which means she too wants the process to remain confidential. I understand questioning the confidentiality policy of a university when it seems to only be protecting a rapist, but here it also appears to be protecting the victim. If she doesn’t want her name or any of the details of the assault public, then that should be her option.

PREACH! Jezebel gets this so wrong. It seems like the system might have worked for the student in this case and maybe, just maybe the student survivor is happy with the outcome.

Good point. I had been conflicted about this but that’s a great point. Also potential witnesses who were interviewed are protected, as they always face backlash too.

I really want to know more because of how poorly sexual assault cases have been handled in the past by Yale, and I understand how it could help the student body, but clearly the victim doesn’t want this public (at least at this point). And I can say that this was the case for all my friends who were raped in college.

My cynism here but- is it a sign of meaningful change, or did he do something so god damn awful and irrefutable they were forced to make an unprecedented move they don’t usually do?

That’s a solid counterpoint that a lot of commenters are making, but it’s just not really something I can speculate on at this point.

Seems fairly likely it must have been some solid evidence for them to deviate from lienency, particularly since he’s some big athlete.

Everytime there’s a new update on this story, I feel even more confused.

Today’s confusion: whether an athlete being so quickly and totally shitcanned for sexual misconduct is a sign of changing attitudes towards sexual assault and rape on the part of universities, or a sign that the evidence against him was so blatant and unquestionable that they had no choice; like, on the level of he began sexually harassing another woman while being questioned on the stand.

...Or a sign that Yale really wanted to get this out of view quickly. I can’t imagine that sending a rapey team captain to an NCAA tourney was going to do much for Yale’s PR.

But what will the all the assholes who told me I’m ruining a guys life for saying that it is important we take these protests seriously do now? Not tell me how they are always right and I am wrong? Please, I need the mansplaining!

But I’m glad to see at least some students get expelled for sexual assault. That is not always the case. I would hope there would be criminal charges, because if they have enough evidence to expel him, maybe there is a shot at actual justice in a court of law?

So what is it that makes men so quick to assume that rape accusations are lies? I just don't get it. They're SO angry about it. I just don't understand the logic - they must know that rape happens, right?
