Women have been harassed for being women since the dawn of time. But sure, we’re super surprised it happens online too.

Sad part is that no matter how much evidence is accumulated there are still men who think this never happens. They look at these surveys/statistics, hear anecdotes from every woman in their life, and yet still assume it can’t be that bad. In fact, men get harassed just as much. /s

not to mention, not all men are like that, and it’s insulting to imply that. in fact, them being insulted is actually worse than the harassment in the first place!

I follow Jen Kirkman on Twitter & she’s constantly calling out sexist assholes online. She’s doing good work by trying to get them to examine their own misogynist tendencies & read up on feminism. But fuck, that shit must be exhausting. Good on her for trying, tho. If she gets thru to 2% of her trolls then I guess it’s a win?

Ugh when will women just STOP existing?! Don’t we realize how much valuable time we are wasting for men by forcing them to not only harass us in actual every day life but now they have to harass us online as well?!

    Ugh, us women, always existing.

It’s not so much that you need to stop existing. I mean, how else will men do sex to you? No, you just need to stop exhibiting any sort of independent thought or opinions and stay home all day, naked. Like Ferengi women, only you don’t need to pre-chew the men-folk’s food. Yet.

but also if our men can’t support a household we better jump in at their say so and make that money and then be available to cook and clean for them and be a hole.

I’m not surprised. I’ve even read comments on a local news blog how the commenters enjoy coming to Jezebel to read our comments because they believe them to be stupid then tell us how stupid they think we are.

Wonder why they pick here in particular and not Gawker? Hmm...

Pft. Go to any other Gawker-site comments section and you’ll see people complaining about Jez.

Us ladies over here are so crazy...what with our radical ideas that misogyny is real. The absolute nerve of us to call it out and complain about it. Sometimes even going so far as to provide info for organized meets or links to places where you can donate to Planned Parenthood and other established whore causes.

I got a nasty tweet recently telling me to shut my fuckhole, and that’s the low end of the crap I’ve gotten. It’s still nothing like some of the things women that are more visible on social media get. I’ve gotten rapey comments but never death threats. Thing is- I’m an adult, if I’d gotten some of those messages when I was a teenager it would have been terrifying. I can’t imagine how hard it must be to deal with that.

Yet somehow... It’s still all boys will be boys and “don’t let them get to you” and “you’re being too sensitive.” It's tiring, ugly, dangerous and I don't see it ending.

I’m old and I’ve been through so much shit and even I still get tired of it. I have two sons I love, and when some stuff came up, I came down on it hard, not on them, but made sure everyone was absolutely clear about appropriate behavior IRL and online. (One of them didn’t understand the true story behind GG and his little brother and I explained clearly why anything to do with GG was a huge NO; the younger one came home spouting some sexist BS from a friend, which was also made clear was unacceptable and why.)

And there are still way too many days when I just want to move to a little house, as far from people as possible, and only women are invited to visit.

What saddens me is so many young women who won’t say they’re a feminist because they believe they are already equal to men. Where does this mentality come from? Are our young people so protected and uneducated, inexperienced, accepting??

Maybe it’s cognitive dissonance? We were certainly told to our faces that we are equal and we can do anything we dream. Meanwhile the objectification and forced sexualization and socialized submissiveness continues unabated. One of those world views is nicer to believe in than the other. And citing the continuing need for feminism forces the acknowledgment of the other.

If only gawker media would sacrifice some of their desire for anonymity to help people on this platform avoid harassment.

I’d love to be able to delete comments so I don’t have to worry about the off-site linking dogpile coming to inundate me with angry nonsensical replies months after I’ve made the comment.

I don’t think sacrificing privacy is the way to go ‘cause it’s too easy to game the system with proxies and fake accounts and the like. But, that doesn’t stop GM from putting in simple tools like “give me the option to make my discussions private to non-registered users and let me filter who can see them” or “let me block recommend notifications from X”

Ugh, I’m so sick of these entitled SOBs that ensure that women aren’t EVER allowed to feel safe.

Plus, I don’t even want to think about how many girls (<18 years) are dealing with bullying and sexual harassment by these assholes.

I wonder, what percentage of this is perpetrated by serial harassers?

You know, like the little bastard in this story:

Well, you know, if you’re a woman and you don’t want to be harassed, just don’t go online. Or outside. Or really do anything.

But don’t stay indoors unless you’re doing housework. No eating bonbons while you watch soap operas. And don’t look like a frumpy housewife just because you’ve been cleaning all day-you can take a few minutes to pull yourself together-but not too much- before the head of the household comes home.

What do you mean, “becoming?” It’s been an established norm since online has been a thing.
