Donald Trump might be the next president of your country and this is what you decide to complain about?

Yes. I’m only allowed to complain about one thing per year, and this is my thing.

I’m at the tail end of the baby boomers. I grew up in a world of seriously fucked-up gender bullshit that has only started to unwind in my lifetime. So I guess I see the Try Guys in a different light - the fact that younger men are even willing to get out and play in the fields of gender roles is refreshing to my old brain.

I have always said that we’ll be a long way to gender equality when men can dress however they feel like dressing without getting beat up. I’m happy to see Eugene looking good in a dress and the other guys telling him that. It may seem simplistic and basic to you, but as an Old, it warms my heart because my BIL wouldn’t let his sons wear baby clothes with lace on them lest they become homos.

My niece’s boyfriend told me the other day that he loves wearing eye makeup. It’s about goddamn time.

I’m in the bottom third of Gen X, and I’m kind of with you. I know there are some Buzzfeed videos that are a real stretch. But I do think the spirit that goes into making them is generally good, whether it be sympathetic or at least with the intention for viewers to think of something they may take for granted in a different way.

I don’t think it’s necessarily your generation that helps you see it that way (for what it is). They’re normalizing this stuff just by talking about it and being willing to try it, even if they feel silly at first and do things for laughs. If they were sticking to whatever things this author deems acceptable for them to “try,” then the author would complain that they were ignoring all this other stuff like wearing dresses, and these other perspectives.

It’s just more of this false outrage that people get about literally everything. They run out of interesting things to say so they shit on something that people like and generally see as good and say that it’s not good enough or try to come up with reasons why it’s bad. That’s like the Gawker Media MO (and I say this as a pretty loyal Gawker reader for many years - I just get so tired of it sometimes).

This also puts me in mind of those gender-swapped things that are essentially, “look at these overweight bearded dudes posing sensually in a calendar because haha normally super hot chicks do that this is so crazy right!”

Because they’re often presented almost as, see, now we’ve had dudes do this so now we understand objectification. Look at this incredible point we’re making!

It’s the pretense that this stuff is intended to do anything other than be silly that irks me. Like, own it.

Yeah, making a mockery of the ways women are objectified does not equality make. That’s like saying bc British comedians have been dressing as women for a laugh for decades that they have solved sexism for good.

I don’t know...I feel like stuff like the Hawkeye Initiative and John Scalzi and co. trying to pose like female characters on sci-fi covers can go a long way to show how ridiculous these concepts are, and how much of a disparity there is between how men and women are portrayed in the media. It’s amazing how that stuff is so common that both men and women are inured to it, and seeing a man depicted in the same spine-bending pose can be both shocking and enlightening.

The try guys aren’t about gay panic, they are about painting gay panic as completely ridiculous. They are about showing people that, just because you are easily freaked out about such a simple thing, that doesn’t mean there is anything actually wrong with it. The try guys almost always realize that there isn’t actually anything wrong with what they are trying, and that it’s just their social conditioning that made them nervous about it. They are about making people comfortable with guys doing these things.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This article read just like “white girl feminism”...yes, I know how that sounds and now I’m going to shower and cry, but honestly, the Try Guys are demonstrating how stupid our gender normatives are. Thank you, ariesdragon123 for being so much more articulate than I

To be fair, “wipe, wipe, wipe, cleaning off your penis” sounds a lot like some of my more awkward changing pad banter, and I can’t guarantee my husband hasn’t said it either.

Well your opinion is...just that your opinion. I on the other hand adore the Try Guys and get what they are doing and appreciate it. Also are you kidding me with the whole they only do things women do? Bull fucking shit you picked those out to prove your point. The changing diapers one on particular was part of a four part series dedicated to their moms for Mothers Day they went through labor simulations and wore fake bellies for a day and it was real as hell. They have done videos on S&M, Stripping, UFC fighting, they went to Pride and supported that, they went to therapy and it was really touching, they drank and took breathalyzers to show how alcohol affects people differently and even if you feel fine you could be above the legal limit and so much more but you picked those smh

(As I mentioned in another comment, I’ve been using Buzzfeed videos as a hardcore procrastination tool in the last 2ish months, so I’m kind of embarrassed how well-versed I am in all of this)...

I totally agree, this article was so oddly cherry-picked. In addition to all the great points you made about the Try Guys, the other videos messages were cherry picked too. Like the compliment video...I can’t imagine how a person could deny that in the US, men are conditioned not to compliment each other. And the results of making them do it were good. If I remember correctly, one pair said that they already do compliment each other, two pairs said that it was weird at first, but once they got going it was nice, and one pair pretty much treated it as a joke the whole time. So overall, good message.

Then, this article uses this quote:

And leaves out the fact that right after that, both of these guys say it felt good and they think all guys should go compliment their guy friends.

Ehh. The thing is, there are many, many, many Buzzfeed article authors, and that’s on top of the fact that there isn’t just one “section” of Buzzfeed; there’s sections for different topics, sort of like Gawker media’s differing subsites. Of course they’re not all going to think in the same unilateral way, and their articles will be from their various perspectives and on the topics that they personally find interesting/think it’s worth writing about. I get the point, but I just can’t get all that fired up by it I guess.

I’m no Buzzfeed fangirl, but I agree that it’s weird to paint a fairly large company with many content creation streams with one big brush based on what some people are doing. I once worked with a woman who absolutely refused to read Gawker sites because Tracy Egan had done some drunk interview somewhere and said something the woman considered to be deeply offensive or misogynist or something. And I was like, “you know there’s more than one site at Gawker, right? And more than one writer at Jezebel?” But, no. Blanket condemnation based on one thing one person did. I’ve noticed an increasing tendency to want to shun people/things like that. I REJECT THEE!
