For all the hate, vitriol, subtle and overt racism that was aimed at this man over the last eight years, did he not handle it with uncommon grace and dignity? I never asked President Obama to be a perfect President, such a thing is an impossibility. But he played the long game, never panicked, never showed fluster, and embodied humor and joy. Beyond all that, in spades, he is a wonderful father and husband, and Michelle is an amazing woman, mother, and role model. I’ll miss him dearly. History will be kind to his legacy, even if the radical right is currently not.

He was used to that vitriol whilst a private citizen. Racism isn't anything new to black people in the Americas. I think it shocked white people, who thought the presidency ought to be treated with more respect. The reality is that race and racism are in the foundation of the Republic. Unless we have a time machine, it is difficult to undo.

In so many ways, against so much hate from the geriatric immature and uneducated, he really has taken the high road.

GOOD. I’m glad they are taking Sasha’s feelings into consideration. My family moved from my hometown while I was in high school. The move was absolutely necessary, something I knew even then. But my parents’ response to my fears about going to a different school was a lot of eye rolls and calling me a selfish wuss. It was a long time ago, but it still pisses me off.

I moved twice in high school, zero sympathy.

My brother moved three times in high school, zero sympathy.

      Parents just don’t understand

My brother did get the sympathy. My dad was commuting and living in a different city during the week. They kept up that arrangement until my brother graduated, although to be fair it was partly because they had problems selling the house.

I was four years younger, so I truly do understand why my parents didn’t want to wait for me to graduate. But when I expressed sadness or fears about moving, suddenly I was a giant drama queen baby who just wanted her own way, even when I stated repeatedly that I was just looking for some compassion.

That’s when I started to realize that empathy isn’t a strong trait in my family.

Good for them. One thing I can say is the kids at Sidwell seem to be pretty cool. You really don’t get a lot coming out about Sasha and Malia. Seems like they are protected there by the staff and other students. Chelsea Clinton went here too and it was the same. $38K a year sheesh...I wonder if they got a sibling discount. Sidenote, I had a colleague that went there and was really down to earth and well adjusted. His friends were too.

All the other students there are the children of diplomats and other important political leaders...so I suspect they’re used to keeping quiet.

    Quick Q:

Can they like maybe stay in the White House? Maybe govern a bit until Sasha’s out of High School? Like...nothing big...just progressive executive orders and like...doing right by people...

It’s good they are taking what she wants into consideration. But, I am also feeling pedantic and wouldn’t exactly call sophomore year ‘middle of high school’. For a lot of places, that is the start of high school if they have a jr high that is 7th, 8th, and 9th. Kinds end up going to a different high school than most of the people they went to jr high with due to zoning stuff. Like it still sucks to move and have to make new friends and all that, but it wouldn’t have been like the when my cousin had to switch schools a couple weeks into her senior year, or when I almost did halfway through my senior year.

I’m sure the fact the school has been a safe place and seems to respect the family’s privacy has played a big role in the decision.

As he’s still in office and won’t be out until Jan of next year, she will be at least halfway through her sophomore year(assuming she’s a freshman this year) and since most schools are 9-12, it would be exactly halfway through. Besides, it’s not like she’s just any anonymous kid switching schools and it appears her school goes through 12th grade, so she won’t have to deal with a switch regardless.

They both seem like the parents everyone should be so lucky to have. My mother is a narcissist and all around nightmare, and I figured that one out as really little kid, so I have always kind of had this habit of “collecting” surrogate mother figures to emulate and look up to, even in adulthood. I probably need so much therapy. But Michelle Obama is totally one of those figures for me.

My uncle’s girlfriend has a condo in DC that she only uses a few weeks out of the year for business. They can totally stay there. I promise to call before coming over. I’ll bring cookies!
