What gets me is how companies can write off any business expense under the sun, from box seats for the Knicks to lavish vacations business trips, but workers can’t even write off shit like gas/miles driving to work or suits required for the job.

Labor IS capital in an capitalist society. Never forget that. Flex your muscle at every opportunity. Expect for every operator in corporate America to do the same. Every individual’s bottom line is cash inflows. Don’t sacrifice yours just to save face or re-assure an employer. There’s always someone down the road that will need labor that can be offered. If you work it, talk about working it, prepare to work it, take a break to piss while working it, you should be paid.

So true. What a lot of companies don’t realize is that when you take a long(er) time horizon on this, keeping employees happy and engaged actually benefits productivity, innovation, etc. It’s how you build something to last rather than something to cash in on.

Reminder to hourly workers: Don’t EVER work off the clock, no matter what your boss tells you to do. If they try to get you to do it, call the DOL.

I always heard flight attendants only get paid for the time between when the plane’s wheels leave the ground and when the plane’s wheels touch down again at the destination, even though much of the work they do involves pre-flight checks and whatnot. Is this true and how is it legal?

This is true: I’ve asked flight attendants about this.

I don’t know how it is legal, but I also was told that the flight attendants must belong to their union. A union that sucks balls at negotiating, since flight attendants are compelled to do so much uncompensated work.

They get paid 15 minutes before the flight takes off and after it lands. They might get 30 minutes each way if they have to pass through customs. They are expected to be on the plane though an hour before it first takes off (sometimes the crew lands with the plane, stays, and departs back on the same plane). They also get paid different wages depending on if the flight is domestic or international.

Completely UN-related to the issue at hand, Hormel just had one of their best quarters in company history and guided for even higher earnings next year.

So... ya know, I can see why they’re trying to nickel and dime their own employees. Times are tough.

The only defense I would make of the Hormel senior management is that they’ve done a good job buying valuable brands at good prices and growing earnings. BUT that obviously doesn’t mean that labor shouldn’t be rewarded for their contributions to company growth.

One thing I never understood about the Amazon court case that made it to the Supreme Court is that workers can be compelled to clock out and then spend upwards of half an hour being searched.

I know that this solution is not a point of law, and the Supreme Court doesn’t actually exist to find Solomonic solutions that improve justice. But if you located the punchout machine on the far side of security, I bet the searches would get REALLY efficient.

That was a purely political decision by SCOTUS. Don’t try to find internal logic in the opinion.

see, I just consider it part of the commute. It’s a security checkpoint. You factor that in to getting to and from home, like time spent having to walk to the train station or the parking garage.

I used to work for a doughnut shop whose owner bragged about how they made a profit by marking up the cost of the required uniform hats and shirts they sold to the employees.

The shirts were shoddy cotton Ts of course, which required us to continually buy them as they quickly wore out in the harsh bakery conditions.

The four years spent working for people like that helped form my faith in the value of socialism and liberalism.

There’s nothing quite like seeing raw, unbridled greed firsthand (not to mention being a victim of it) to make one hate capitalism.

I don’t think I would want to buy a meat product from a company who publically states that their workers don’t have to wear protective gear. Not a good move Hormel.

Or one that seeks to cut costs by stiffing their workers out of 6 minutes of pay, I worry about what other ways they cut costs with products intended to be consumed by humans.
