What does that mean for you all as workers? Unionization didn’t seem to have an impact on all of the org changes in 2015.

We didn’t have a contract ratified last year—I wish we had!

Do you think the impending contract contributed to the drastic changes?

What will I do without all those three-hour meetings though, how will we all hang out

Might I suggest banning TomatoFace and all his iterations? Seems like a 3 hour a day job.

      Or beer.

In the comments the other day someone was asking why you chose the WGA over the Newspaper Guild. I had my thoughts on why it would have been a smart choice but maybe you can give an authoritative answer here.

The simple answer is that the WGA really wanted to help us unionize. They were really excited about it, and helped us push ourselves when we needed it. I’m not sure if the Newspaper Guild ever reached out to anyone at Gawker... to my knowledge they did not. That’s not a knock against them, btw, but we just really capitalized on the momentum of the WGA.

Gawker’s not a newspaper, and their writers are not journalists. (That’s my guess)

    First of all, congrats.

Second of all, for all the nay-sayers who are like ‘this isn’t a blue collar job, why do you need a union’. I’d like to say: you’ve been duped and conditioned into thinking that. There are many, many countries with high tech, white collar unions, and for good reason. Maybe it’s part of my syndicalist leaning, or the fact I have a few too many friends in the IWW, but, when unions have a strong say in the production and direction of companies, it leads to stronger workplaces and production. I’d be thrilled, as a white collar worker who spends an hour a day fighting on the internet with people, to be represented by a union because you are the business. You’re not just human capital, which tends to divide and conquer employees. While it’s true that unions have been racist and sexist in the past, this is the product of America’s racism and sexism, and not with the unions themselves. They can be a powerful tool of change in how we as producers interact with business, regardless of the type of work we do.

Yes, you too can fight for an all white workplace! You too can work in a place that fired most of their best writers, including the only POC and many women, before a union contract is ratified to avoid paying them more severance or giving them benefits!

I forgot to mention how during the process of this Unionization when women found out they were making less than their male peers with similar jobs they were told not to dick measure on salary. Because Gawker employees care more about a pointless unionization gesture than actual discrimination in its own office.

My late grandmother, who helped unionize grocery stores in Detroit in the 1930s, is somewhere giving you a nice slow clap and smiling. Nice job.

I thought slow claps were supposed to be a bad thing, like a sarcastic “oh isn’t that nice” kind of clap.

Congratulations! I helped unionise a large franchise of outdoor education instructors many years ago, and it was one of the most meaningful and productive things I’ve ever done. The change in the work culture was immediate and long lasting.
