  Liberals in California tend to be urbanites, living in LA and and San Francisco proper. Once you leave the big cities, you get a lot of conservatives, especially in Orange, San Bernardo, Bakersfield and San Diego counties. Trust me, I’m a CA native and I can attest to this. Indian Wells is a predominately white, older retirement community. I go an attend the tournament there every year.

There was no twitter then... but black folk knew what happened there and never forgot, either. Those fucking people... and it wasn’t just there. It was (is) all over with americans rooting for any foreign white lady against one of the sisters, or both of the sisters when they play double. They get more love out of this country than in and that sting will never go away because it is recorded for all to see anytime anyone wants to see it. A dam shame that two great athletes and perhaps the greatest in her sport were/ are treated this way on home soil.

  This. Everywhere. As a long-time tennis/golf/skating-on-tv fan, listening to the commentary around the Williams sisters, especially early on, was jaw-grinding. But, again, not dissimilar to the commentary around Woods, Jesse Williams, Debbi Thomas, Surya Bonaly, etc. Always the back-handed compliment that begrudgingly acknowledged the accomplishment while painting that compliment in the language of “other.” How “muscular” Venus and Serena are, if only Debbi and Surya could up their “artistry” rather than always relying on their athleticism, etc.

Just unbelievable. Just another example of people not believing black people. Reminds me of something someone said to me about how a male superior “was oppressing you while he was telling you you weren’t oppressed.” The layers of violence involved in what happened to the Williams family. Holy shit.

The Williams sisters are both confident, fiercely competitive, well-spoken, physically powerful, cagey on the court, and at ease with their personal style. Which is why most men (of all races) find them terrifying. I consider them a litmus test for guys, actually; if a man says he can't stand the Williams sisters, he's marked himself in my book as a potential jerk.

They had faced each other repeatedly before and would again many more times. Why suddenly would they do that? Plus, Venus is a loving and caring big sister but she’s a competitor. No way she bows out. She’s proud of her sister when she wins but she doesn't hand her anything. And no matter what a Williams sister would have been in the final so what damage did they think was done? Even the supposed premise was so fucking flimsy.

I love both the Williams sisters but I’ve always had a special place in my heart for Venus. I’ve seen her play several times and it’s always a pleasure.
