I don’t want to be callous, but I’m going to be callous because it does need to be said. There’s a reason the State Department strongly discourages you in the strongest language it can possible from traveling to North Korea as a tourist.

Now freeing him is going to have to involve high level international diplomacy, get tied up in negotiations over sanctions over their nuclear program, require numerous top-level meetings of state department and white house officials who have better things to be doing and so on.

I feel bad for what happened to him. But at the same time, you took this huge risk of going to this place and you’re realizing the downside outcome of it. The lesson is — when the state department says “do not go to this place,” maybe don’t go there.

You can still prove your badass tourist bonafides elsewhere. There’s a line between “living on the edge” and traveling to exotic interesting places, and being an idiot, and he seems to have crossed it. This is what crossing it looks like.

This is the same way I felt about those people who went hiking along the Iraq-Iran border and got imprisoned in Iran for being “spies” for several years. I mean, its horrible what happened to them and I don’t excuse what the Iranians did and I bet the moments were really beautiful, but seriously you’re going to do that in the middle of a war and think its not going to look super fishy to the Iranians? What did you expect to happen?

I’m assuming the tl;dr version of this reads something like “stay away from North Korea, fucknuts” and I agree 100%.

By “quiet shoes” do they mean sneakers? Because owning sneakers is clearly premeditated intent to sneak.

Officials were disappointed the student was not wearing the highly-sought-after yet elusive Middle East teleportation shoe technology popular among young government agents, Air Jordans.

There’s also the couple who went hiking in Afghanistan... while the wife was pregnant. She gave birth in captivity, apparently.

“Warmbier was going to give the stolen item to his church in exchange for a “$10,000 used car,” and per NK News the reward also included $200,000 from the church for “university tuition” for his siblings.”

North Korea is so backwards. Whoever thought up of this explanation must be so far removed from reality. This doesn’t even make any sense. A church was going to give him a used car for bringing back some lame slogan sign thingy. AND pay $200k for university?!?! WHAT?!?!?!

You don’t understand! The church was in cahoots with the CIA! It was a plot to steal the slogan which surely would have led to civil unrest within glorious people’s democratic republic!!

I know! I used to work at a mainline church, and the idea of a United Methodist church having that kind of cash is laughable.

Surprisingly, Germany has been support North Korea in this story. They are fighting hard to prevent the release of Warmbier.

I’ve traveled to some really sketchy places before, but I’ll never understand why an American citizen would go to North Korea or Iran, let alone do something like this while they’re there. The chances of being detained as a political prop are just so high.

Americans who go to North Korea come in two flavors: Christian Missionaries (95%) and wannabe Shane Smiths (5%).

Fuck the first group and fuuuuuuuuck the second group.

Let’s parade some of the Guantanamo detainees in front of cameras to have them talk about their “crimes” and see just how different it looks compared to a regime we decry as brutal inhumane dictators.
