I knew this guy in college... douchey wingnut, wore Confederate flag t-shirts, etc. Not very bright. Whenever he said something stupid, there would often be someone there to make some scathing, sarcastic comment back that was essentially making fun of him... and he would laugh along because he had no idea his idiocy was being mocked. The fact that he had no idea he was the subject of the joke always made it x1000 funnier.

Come now, since when was that a problem for white people in Hollywood? How many movies has Mel Gibson starred in?Charleston Heston?Joan Crawford?

White actors have even had problems that caused cost over-runs like drug addiction or alcoholism which is a cardinal sin in Hollywood and still had careers (Robert Downey Jr. for example).

Lack of talent is also not a problem judging by Katherine Heigl still having a career.

I don’t like Stacy Dash or her ideas but there is no way that her biggest obstacle in Hollywood isn’t her race.

Mel Gibson is a really bad example because his career actually was pretty well tanked after his meltdown. Since then I can only think of four movies he’s been in, and one of them was straight to streaming.

It’s the face you make when someone accidentally drops a sexual innuendo in a super-serious office meeting and you want to laugh but you look around the room and realize you might be the only one who picked up on it... From here on out can we just call that the Stacy Dash?

“I’m not “black enough,” they say. Let know when somebody finally explains that we’re laughing at her, not with her.”

Oh, honey- nobody has ever accused you of being black enough. People are put off by the fact that you are a willfully ignorant token.

I hope somebody explains the difference between laughing with you and laughing at you to Stacy Dash.

you’re not black, right? you guys dont seem to get how common it is for any of us who think/talk/dress differently to be called uncle toms/not black enough. i am a very socially liberal AA woman but more financially centrist and i am constantly told im not black enough by half my cousins. it happens all the time. white people love to keep us in one category too. we are more easily controlled that way.

Have you actually read Uncle Tom’s Cabin? I’m guessing not because the reference blew over your head.

Stacy Dash is consciously selling out her heritage for the “honor” of being a FOX news token. She’s so dense, she doesn’t realise that she’s being used by the party that have consistently kept her community down. She’s against every effort for equality just for the sake of being a contrarian.

And what does being a financial centrist have to do with anything? Every rational person is financial careful. The issue is where and how you want the money spent.

I assumed that the silence was because she is so irrelevant that 90% of the crowd probably didn’t get the joke? You have to know that she’s been saying dumb shit to even get that he’s trolling. Somehow I don’t think most of the people in that room keep up with what Dionne is saying on Fox News.

It was definitely one of the weirdest fucking things I’ve seen though.

Yep. Even at the pretty politically savvy party I was in, I was the only one to laugh uncomfortably. People knew who she was, Mean Girls style, but she’s so irrelevant politically that it meant nothing. Honestly, it’ll go down like Beyoncé at the Super Bowl, no one wil get the references until they are explained overnight, then they’ll be all up in dander. Clever move, Mr. Rock.

It took me a second as I was a bit baffled by her appearance, but as the absurdity of what was happening finally caught up with me I laughed. I generally don’t watch award shows, so I can’t properly gauge how Chris Rock is doing as a host, but I’m enjoying it so far.

      The best!

And, I too was shocked when the real deal stepped out. I think she was just so glad to realize her dream of appearing on the Oscars stage - in ANY capacity, that she agreed to do this. I also believe she had no concept of the irony of the situation. And, if she did and still appears on Fox, then she’s a much better actor than anyone gives her credit for.

I want to think, in some way, that was the meta-commentary in this move — Chris Rock turning the joke around on the people who claim they’re all for diversity in Hollywood without actually thinking about what that means.

“You’re for diversity right? Well here’s an actress of color, *who does not think the same way you do*”.

And you, pizzaqueen91, demonstrate his point exactly. Diversity is great, but not if it’s “This. Bitch.” Hmm? Right? Us Liberals love everyone, as long as they agree with us.

It was actually really mean. She clearly didn’t get the joke, didn’t understand she was the butt of it. Her statement shows that. And he clearly knew she wouldn’t, and set her up to walk out to stony silence. That’s why she had the nervous giggle.

This was a really complex thing he did, and from the looks of the stories and comments I’ve been reading it was as effective as he could hope for.

It was really kinda brilliant. But it was mean as hell. There will be squealing from Fox about this that’ll surpass the fake poutrage over Beyonce’s Superbowl affront. Of course, that’s assuming that someone explains the joke to them.

Now I’m starting to get it via a different capacity and although I already liked Chris Rock’s material before, I have a new appreciation for this level of humor. A joke we get, but then we feel confused and uncomfortable because a participant in the joke doesn’t get it. Following that, we admire the joke even more because it’s taken so many turns and at the expense of an arrogant, disruptive shill, so we have to be impressed.

I say brava to Rock and the writers. This is one for the books.

That being said, it was sort of mean, but who’s playing a violin for Stacey ‘Fox News Side Act’ Dash?
