So this is about ...what?...heritage?...patriotism? Because after all, what's more patriotic than secession on the basis of white supremacy? Yes, I said WHITE SUPREMACY. You can't ignore the truth forever.

White supremacists should be offended too, if they consider themselves to be patriotic. The Confederacy seceded from their beloved country that gives them the 1st and 2nd Amendments that are their lifeblood, and then fought a war against that country they feel so patriotic about.

If you support the Confederacy, you hate black people.

If you support the Confederacy, you hate America.

One or both can be true for any individual person.

Even if you take out the racial aspect, the slavery aspect... isn’t this just... treasonous? How dare you say you support our troops, how dare you proclaim that America is the “greatest country” in the world... how dare you do those things and then laud a group of people who rose up against that nation and fought with force in an attempt to leave it.

Why, yes, it is treasonous. Also, March is to be “Jim Crow Law Nostalgia Month,” which I also have a problem with.

I assume one celebrates confederate heritage by having one's neighbor from the north side of the street come over and kick one's ass and then burn one's house down, and then one tells maudlin tales to the younger generations, romanticizing the event as a fight for state's rights.

My husband (a northerner currently living in the south) suggests commemorating Sherman’s March. He says he’s happy to help if they ask nicely.

When can we expect to celebrate Tories? I’d like to start proclaiming my proud heritage of not wanting to declare independence from Great Britain.

I’m thinking of kicking it off in July with a tasteful celebration. None of these rubbish explosions and tawdry parades of which the rebels are so fond. Simple, yet elegant like our true Queen.

That's pretty transparently what this proclamation is about, too: white supremacy. They won't use those words, but that doesn't change what it is.

I wasn’t aware that 4 years of being in open rebellion entitled you to a “heritage.” Anyone would think the Confederacy was around for a hundred years the way people bleat on about all the “history” and “culture” it has.

You are rushing into war with one of the most powerful, ingeniously mechanical, and determined people on Earth — right at your doors. You are bound to fail. Only in your spirit and determination are you prepared for war. In all else you are totally unprepared, with a bad cause to start with.

Sherman really summed it up the best. You were idealistic fools with bad ideals. And you lost. So suck it up, Buttercup, and move the fuck on. The fact that this period in your history is some kind of rosy-eyed ideal just shows how pathetic your present is.

Sherman was also accused of having a mental breakdown when, in the early weeks of the war, he insisted that Northern generals’ optimism for an easy victory was ridiculous and that it would be a bloody and years-long conflict. Not exactly a great guy, but he was one of the great military minds of history.

He really was an exceptional military talent, it is amazing how different the war could have been if he and Grant were taken more seriously from the get-go. I know people love the narrative that the Confederate army was brilliant and skillful but outnumbered, but in all honesty they spent most of the early parts of the war batting against total boobs like McClellan.

Sherman is also my spirit animal since I live in a state that was a part of the Confederacy, and people love to throw around that “war of Northern aggression bullshit,” I just shake my head and let William T speak words of wisdom:

Three years ago by a little reflection and patience they could have had a hundred years of peace and prosperity, but they preferred war; very well. Last year they could have saved their slaves, but now it is too late. All the powers of earth cannot restore to them their slaves, any more than their dead grandfathers. Next year their lands will be taken, for in war we can take them, and rightfully, too, and in another year they may beg in vain for their lives. A people who will persevere in war beyond a certain limit ought to know the consequences. Many, many peoples with less pertinacity have been wiped out of national existence.

      And:

You know and I know that long before the North, or the Federal Government, dreamed of war the South had seized the U.S. arseuals, forts, mints, and custom-houses, and had made prisoners of war of the garrisons sent at their urgent demand to protect them ‘against Indians, Mexicans, and negroes’.

Mississippi person here: Yes, this is COMPLETELY redundant, in addition to being (just my opinion) absurdly ridiculous, backwards, and belligerently stupid. Oh yeah, how about it’s also incredibly insensitive and rude as all hell. But mainly, REDUNDANT. Practically every town in the state has at least one confederate memorial statue (they’re standing every day, not just in April). There are even towns / communities that didn’t EXIST until after the civil war, and some of THEM have confederate memorials. It’s like the governor has decided to make sure the entire state is thumbing its nose at . . . itself. Redeeming/mitigating factor: at last my home state is doing something stupid and it might not end up costing the rest of the country tons of money. Good God.

They have a long history of being proud of things that are shameful. Just take a look at the second paragraph from their secession letter from the before the Civil War.

Seriously makes me sick. I say we flood any asshole publicly celebrating this “holiday” on social media with that text. Don’t fucking pretend this bullshit is or ever was about anything other than slavery at its roots. You can shout “states’ rights” all you like, but the only reason they gave a shit was because they didn’t want to give up slavery.
