That’s worse then the Ultra-orthadox Kohanim who believe that they are not allowed to fly over cemeteries and so wrap themselves in plastic.

Why are they allowed to fly over cemeteries if they wear plastic?

Is this a real thing? What makes plastic — which was invented just a hundred years or so ago — an adequate barrier for violations of thousands-years-old spiritual beliefs?

Finally. If your religion prohibits any sight or incidental contact with women, maybe you should stay home. We certainly won't.

Also, if your religion prohibits you from interacting with literally half the people on the planet, your religion probably sucks.

This is interesting because it’s essentially about competing rights. What is my right to not be moved/inconvenienced because I’m a woman, compared to someone else’s right to not sit next to a woman if they have a genuinely held belief that it is against their religion? Canada had an interesting case that examined this where a Muslim barber refused to cut a woman’s hair. While the woman basically won, the case actually found that you couldn’t force an individual Muslim man to cut a woman’s hair, but that as a business owner that Muslim man should have figured out an alternative - e.g. passed her on to one of his less observant employees.

Also in Canada: A company had to get rid of their biometrics security system because they couldn’t prove to a handful of Pentecostal employees that the number attached to their fingerprint didn’t have “666" in it.

Human rights law = not easy.

This is not the same situation. Both parties are customers. One customer is receiving preferential treatment and harassing the other customer (who did nothing wrong) simply because of his religious views. They could have moved the man and then both parties’ rights would have been satisfied.

It seems pretty easy to me; your sincerely held religious beliefs don’t give you the right to discriminate against others, or to get someone else to do so on your behalf. And if those beliefs mean you’re incapable of doing your job, you get to find a new job.

This makes me uncomfortable. No one should be asked to move, but religious beliefs should be respected (please note that I am an atheist). I think this guy should have been the one to move. Also, if this is happening often enough, then I think the airline should ask passengers whether they object to sitting next to women at check-in, and arrange seats accordingly.

Yes. And let’s ask all white passengers whether they object to sitting next to minority races too, just to be super polite!

Do you think you’d feel the same way if it was someone else demanding the airline work to accommodate his refusal to sit next to the guy in this article because he had a problem with Jews?

If this dude has such a problem with women existing and moving freely in public spaces because he might accidentally look at or touch them, then he should probably just avoid public spaces rather than ask everywhere he goes if he can have a special women-free zone.

I just don’t understand why, if these guys really can’t sit next to women, they don’t just start their own all-male airline other than the fact that I’ve already copyrighted that idea and am halfway done designing the Stewards uniforms.

I used to work in an Orthodox community with victims of child abuse. None of the men would ever touch me because God, so whenever I had my period I would go out of my way to make accidental contact with them, just to spite.

    Assholes.

AJ Jacobs, who wrote a book about trying to live by everything in the bible for year, said that his wife got angry at him and sat on everything in their house during her period (which makes it off limits to men), so he started carrying a folding stool around with him everywhere.

Just an FYI: it’s because they believe it’s adultery. It would dishonor their wives to touch another woman, even if it’s just a handshake. I’m not defending the practice or anything like that, but I think it’s important to know the reasons behind cultural differences.

Flight delays on El Al are growing more and more common as a result of male Orthodox passengers who refuse to sit next to women, believing that even glancing or inadvertent physical contact with non-relatives of the opposite sex is forbidden.

So maybe they just need to start seating male passengers traveling alone next to other male passengers traveling alone.

I’ve never flown El Al, but I’m 1000% certain that if I had ever delayed a flight by refusing to sit in my assigned seat, any airline I’ve ever flown would have responded by getting my ass off the plane to let rational people get to their destinations. They need to stop accommodating bigots.

In theory, sure. Unfortunately, these charming gentlemen tend to throw huge tantrums whenever anyone suggests that their misogyny should inconvenience them instead of every woman they come into contact with, and the airline appears to think that discriminating against women to accommodate them is a reasonable solution to keep them happy.

It amazes me that a country that had female combat soldiers for so many years has a significant population with this kind of attitude. The older I get, the less tolerant I am of using religion to justify bigotry, misogyny, or neurosis.

Suck it up, asshole. I you don’t want to sit next to a woman, you have to be the one who finds an alternative, even if that means swimming to your destination.
