It doesn’t matter why he did it. Americans don’t give a fuck when a couple dozen kindergartners get mowed down, they certainly don’t give a fuck about this.

Look, sometimes a bunch of kindergarteners just get mass murdered, okay? No need to get worked up about it. I mean, other than freaking out that Obama’s going to take all your guns so you better buy several more to be prepared when he comes for you. Obviously you should get worked up over that.

Maybe he wanted fame? If he had a family, was gregarious, well-known, and well-liked, then it seems like he had lots of attention already.

Exactly. There is never really a reason. Not one that would make any sense, anyway.

The more interesting question is why he didn’t shoot himself before the cops could arrest him, as seems to becoming the norm.

Whenever I hear “Uber Shooter”, I picture “Über Shüter”.

I still don’t understand why, in the US, being angry, armed, and violent is treated as “there must be a motive or he’s nuts”, but if there’s a stated ideology it’s different. Odds are that shooter swearing allegance to whatever were also angry, armed, and violent.

Shooting to get attention for yourself, or for getting attention for yourself for a cause doesn’t seem that different to me.

In the US, being “angry, armed and violent” is called being a citizen of one of dozens of states and is becoming the norm. Actually shooting someone is a line most still do not cross.

“Matyas said that call doesn’t appear to be ‘any type of trigger mechanism’ for the crimes.”

    Christ, dude. PHRASING.

He had a trigger mechanism. It’s called a gun. We don’t know why he did it, but we all know how. Sure he could have driven his Uber car over some people, but that gun empowered him, and sure made it super easy to kill, no matter the motive.

Shhhhh! You're not allowed to mention the gun. That's called politicizing the situation.

The gig economy made him do it!

edit: or maybe he thought an active shooter would result in surge pricing, gotta create demand.

WHY did he start with Uber a month before? I think there are money problems that will take time to tease out. Maybe compulsive gambling? Who knows. But men don’t take on second jobs for no reason, and the grind can wear you down and put you closer to the breaking point, particularly if you are not doing well at it and it’s not solving your original problem.

I think I read he had previously been an insurance adjuster, so maybe he lost his job recently and was doing Uber to make ends meet/provide for his family.

Personnel Officer: So whaddya want to hack for, Bickle?

Travis Bickle: I can’t sleep nights.

Personnel Officer: There’s porno theaters for that.

Travis Bickle: Yeah, I know. I tried that.

Personnel Officer: So what do you do now?

Travis Bickle: Well, I ride around nights mostly... subways, buses... I figure, you know, if I’m gonna do that I might as well get paid for it.

I would love to see him get a brain scan. Tumors can cause sudden violence in people who have no history of mental illness. It may be that he’s given them no motive because he doesn’t know what the hell is going on either.
