So should they invite her JUST because she’s different and fills their diversity quota? Because we know what happens immediately after that. Someone at Gawker writes the next article explaining how she was invited for only that very reason, and everything is still offensive blah blah rinse and repeat.

No, it’s because she was nominated for Best Original Song and wasn’t asked to perform, while all the other (cis) performers this year were (and historically usually are).

She already was invited as a nominee, she is nominated for an award. They however decided two of the nominees, Anohni and David Lang, are unworthy of performing. But let’s bring out Dave Grohl for some reason.

Never forget that for whatever concessions they eventually made to actors, writers and directors, the Oscars and the Academy were created by the producers as a mutual admiration society for themselves while keeping everyone else from organizing themselves into unions.

Really, the only historic and memorable Oscar moments by the awardees have come when they pierce through the charade, like when “Robert Rich” won (really, the blacklisted Dalton Trumbo under pen name) or when Marlon Brando gave up and just let Sasheen Littlefeather do her thing.

Other than that, what is there? Hattie McDaniel winning an Oscar for playing a mammie? (Quick, name any other film she was in. You can’t). Tom Hanks winning for Philadelphia and making an ass of himself? C’mon, try to find a moment when the Oscars had anything to say about anything, even movies. You just can’t.

There was quite a bit of tension when Michael Moore won during the Iraq invasion:

I also suspect the Academy may be trying to avoid bringing another little-known artist onstage alongside pop heavyweights. The late, great Elliott Smith awkwardly performed a low-key tune before Celine Dion belted out the Titanic song. Madonna smirked when she announced his name.

Nobody’s like, watching the Oscars to be reminded of actual real-world suffering. Artists like Elliot Smith and Anohni are just kind of all around bummers man :/

To some of us, the music of Elliot Smith and ANOHNI is uplifting and inspiring because there is hope in their pain. But hey, I’m sure some day they’ll have Pitbull on the Oscars for you, man.

I’m curious to see how the Best Documentary category goes down. Nina Simone could lose to either Amy Winehouse or literally an entire country of Caucasians.

I’m pulling for The Look of Silence, because The Act of Killing was totally robbed. I dare anyone to watch either of those films and not feel like they’ve had a near-death experience —and in the case of a documentary on dark subject matter, that’s actually a good thing.

Act of Killing should’ve won Best Picture that year. “20 Feet From Stardom”!?! Are you kidding me?

ANOHNI might be my favorite artist of the past decade. So consistently beautiful.

She radiates truth. Its a shame she can’t play at the Oscar’s, because everyone should know her, but I secretly wonder if the organizers knew how shallow most of the other “artists” in attendance would have then have seemed by comparison. It sounds corny, but I don’t think a such a self-serving event could have accommodated something so deeply complex and meaningful.

I’m boycotting it but that doesn’t really mean much since I don’t think I’ve ever actually watched one.

I’ve been busy, what happened on Gizmodo?

I mean, who'd honestly want to watch someone no one has ever heard of sing about something no one cares to talk about at an event that gives zero fucks about what you think?

Lawd...HAVE MERCY...I LOVE HER VOICE!!! When I first heard her years ago...with Antony & The Johnsons...I think it was on a show that The Dears were on...it may not be, but for some strange reason, I ALWAYS link those two groups together...anyway...I felt the same way I felt when I’m in CHURCH!!!! Got my fan out and was looking for the tithing basket and EVERYTHANG! The Oscar are fucking ridiculous...it makes NO SENSE...none at ALL that they’re so non-inclusive and non-inspiring...but, I guess they ALWAYS have been....
