I’m good. My ancestors weren’t ripped away from their villages and families, didn’t spend months crapping and vomiting on themselves while chained and violated against their will in the hold of thousands of ships, didn’t die by the millions in the middle passage, didn’t toil in fields, build public and private buildings, didn’t dig ditches and lay roads for no pay, didn’t fight in nearly every single American war while receiving little to no recognition from the military until decades later while continuing to suffer inhuman depravity and hardship, didn’t endure centuries of slavery and imprisonment, didn’t fight for the simple right to be considered human and later be allowed to vote and to be educated in the same school as whites, didn’t march for equality and humans rights, weren’t murdered for exercising their second amendment and first amendment rights, weren’t targeted and assassinated for commenting on or even looking at a white person the wrong way... Only for me to turn into a coward and run to Canada when some idiotic thug convinces some undercover racists to finally be open and straightforward in their bigotry.

This is my home, just as much as it is Trumps and his violent, sexist, racist, fascistic, knucklehead supporters. The rest of you can run if you want, but I’ll be right here.

I hear you, and I can hear that there’s hope in your words that even if Trump wins, maybe things can get better later. I respect your sentiment, but if Trump wins, I don’t know if the America that results from his presidency would be one worth fighting for.

I’m now thinking of taking a trip to Vancouver to check it out, just in case. It’s closer than Sweden and they speak the language, sort of.

Seriously. I’m from the Northeast, outside NY. Living in Toronto can’t be that much different. I’d just take a nice, 8 year work-vacation.

Check out Toronto. They built an entire underground city to avoid the snow and the cold during the winter. I’ve loved every minute I’ve spent in that city.

The bill, proposed by Immigration Minister John McCallum, would shorten the residency requirement, meaning someone who began their application around, say, Super Tuesday, could conceivably become a citizen almost two full years before Trump’s first term ends.

By “residency requirement,” this applies to those who are already permanent residents. Unless you qualify to immigrate here for family reasons (such as having a Canadian citizen spouse or parent), you’ll have to convince Canada that you have specialized skills that they want, and even then, all you’ll get initially is a work visa. Nevertheless, I’ve known a few people here who found themselves kicked back to their home countries after their visa expired and the government wouldn’t renew it, since, from their perspective, their jobs could be done by Canadians and thus, their presence here was no longer needed.

There are a number of Canadians who would gladly marry to save a poor American refugee.

Those Canadians better hope they’re genuinely in love with their American refugees, because immigration fraud through fake marriages is also taken quite seriously up here.

As a former Minnesotan and now New Yorker, Toronto is the perfect merger of the two. It has excellent mass transit, but is on a lake and people say “pop” instead of “soda.” This could be a natural progression for me.

“excellent mass transit” is incorrect (the TTC is antiquated 1950's-era suuuckage), but everything else fits. You’re more than welcome here though.

    Hello fellow black people:

Canada isn’t a land of milk and honey for us either.

And if America turns into an Apartheid state, guess who will happily follow suit?

This! So much this!! I was reading this article and thinking “uhhh yeah, better the devil you know...”

Kinda like watching a time travel movie and thinking “where the fuck could I even go?” and having to settle for a rereading of Kindred.

America WAS an apartheid state and guess who let us in when we wanted to get the fuck away? Canada ain’t perfect but they didn’t stop the Underground Railroad dead in its tracks.
