Isn’t the problem here that any mayor of NYC will always be more famous and influential than the state’s governor? Where else does that happen?

Plenty of states. Just think of a state where one city/metropolitan areas just totally dominates the state, and this is usually the case. It may or may not be on the same level as NYC vs. NY, but it happens in quite a few states.

Eh, Chicago/Illinois is the only other one I can think of where that’s really the case.

Just going with my own state, Milwaukee is the only real “city” we’ve got, and no one outside of it gives a shit about Tom Barrett (other than cursing him for not being good enough to beat Scott Walker). For our neighbors to the northwest, Minneapolis/St. Paul completely dominate the state, but having lived there in the recent past, no one really gave a shit about the mayors.

Usually, the only time you hear a mayor’s name outside of NYC, Chicago, and the city you live in, it’s only because either (a) they’re running for governor, or (b) they’ve fucked up something so badly or were so outrageously corrupt they made national news (i.e. Ray Nagin, Kwame Kilpatrick).

With that placid snakelike gaze of his, we can only assume this is because he had wanted to unhinge his jaw and feast on the victim.

I’m beginning to think that it’s not so much the wishing-ill-upon-others that works for Cuomo. It’s that Cuomo’s response to Sandy —which was laudable in many ways— has given him a Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy: a crisis in the city, any crisis at all , gives Cuomo a chance to swoop in and get back all that adoring media he enjoyed back then.

See if you see a pattern here:

      • An ebola patient checks himself in, is properly cared for by being put into temporary quarantine, and Cuomo’s response is to hold a joint press conference with Chris Christie (!!!) to insist upon his quarantine protocol.
      • Legionella is found at a hotel in the Bronx. Cuomo comes in and insists that his experts inspect and disinfect everything.
      • There’s an explosion in Brooklyn (likely caused by a landlord), and Cuomo insists that his office will investigate.
      • A snow storm comes to NYC, and Cuomo insists that his office will halt the MTA’s services for 24 hours.

And on and on and on...

What gets me in all of this is that this is profoundly junkie-like behavior —chasing that first rush.

Or maybe it’s Andy’s brother Chris that keeps feeding him in that way. “C’mon Andy, I promise, if you find out that there’s really alligators in the sewer, we can put you on TV for 8 hours of the day! Just find me that alligator!”

I can’t decide if that would be the very best slashfic that could possibly be written, or the very very worst. I think I’m going with both.

Both of these guys were in the same office together back in the Bill Clinton administration. So really: what makes you think they haven’t already fucked?

More seriously, there’s something a bit weird about that connection and the direction things took afterward. Cuomo and De Blasio both go back to HUD, but they had wildly different careers afterward. FWIW, Cuomo went through a lost years period where he lost a bid for governor in 2002 (to Carl McCall) and then had to settle for Attorney General where he played Bad Cop against fellow Democrats. De Blasio built up Hillary Clinton’s Senate campaign, then fairly smoothly went up the ladder of city government (2 terms as City Council and Public Advocate apiece) all while sticking to the liberal Democratic script.

What I think things boil down to is that Cuomo and De Blasio are victims of political typecasting: Cuomo can only win through force, and De Blasio can only win through seduction. Trying to do the opposite simply stops working, because Cuomo looks ridiculous using seduction (he simply sounds too much like Monty Python’s gangster —”That’s a nice social program you got there, wouldn’t want to see it get hurt wouldya?”), and De Blasio looks ridiculous using force (see also: every joint press conference with Bill Bratton).

It may just be the munchies talking, but a Cuomo Blasio sounds like some kinda delicious, flame-grilled, fake Italian dish at the Olive Garden with enough cream to harden the arteries of a Kenyan marathon runner.

I’m surprised there’s no picture of him looking at the ropes. After all, looking at that pipe that the big dicked escapee escaped through did a hell of a lot of good.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: this has the fingerprints of not only Cuomo, but Cuomo’s ally in Manhattan politics, Christine Quinn.

After her campaign flamed out in 2013, Quinn became a Cuomo advisor. Afterward, in 2015, she was rewarded with a position that can only be described as “poverty pimp”: head of the charity group Women in Need, Inc.

If that name sounds vaguely familiar, it’s because back in the Bloomberg administration WIN was caught leasing out its considerable holdings for use as an illegal hotel for the Jazz Hostels chain:

    http://www.nyc.gov/html/mancb4/do…

Now, here’s the curious thing: the basis for calling these hotels illegal is that youth hostels are not permitted in NYC. Who’s a well-known proponent of making hostels legal? Yep, Christine Quinn:

Not that it matters (and yet here I am) but am I missing wether the victim was male or female? Did I miss a gender assignment in this article? Just curious as this seems to be a (sorry) hole in the story...

It was at the Bellevue Men’s Shelter, so the implication is that it was a male victim and male perpetrators.

Yes, it was a men’s shelter but I assume it isn’t a completely male-only environment. I just thought it odd that the gender of the victim wasn’t included in the article.
