Agree, but how does one identify a mental health issue in a seemingly normal person for 40+ years?

So, like, what’s the relevance he drove for Uber? I cannot think of a single incident where Gawker, or really any other “news” outlet, has described a mass shooter in a headline using the nature of their job as the primary descriptor. Click bait much?

Well, didn't he pick up fares between his kills during the spree? I think that makes his job relevant.

I think it's somewhat relevant considering he picked up fares between the killings.

    From the New York Times:

Neighbors described him as quiet and polite, though he caught their attention when he occasionally shot a gun out the back door of the house he shared with his wife and two children.

Quiet and polite, except for the loud discharge of a firearm out his back door from time to time. lol

Maybe that’s how people say, “howdy, neighbor!” in Kalamazoo?

He didn’t live in Kalamazoo he lived in Cooper. Its a pretty rural area where behavior like that isn’t uncommon.

Why is, of course, the wrong question. What lead him to do this? What psychological factors? What triggered (word choice) this? What was his life like? Were there any signs beforehand? Did he have a mental health history? Was he a legal gun owner with a mental health history? Any criminal record? Any inkling or hint by those that knew him that he was about to do something drastic, like the way a suicidal person will drop subtle hints? These are all worthwhile questions that deserve exploring whenever this happens.

From what I've read he has no history or record that would indicate he'd ever do something like this, though I read from a commenter above that his wife left him and took the kids, but I haven't verified that. Another white man incapable of coping with disappointment?

Is there a reason we’re fixated on him being an Uber driver? We can demonize Uber in lots of ways (Ham No does a pretty good job at it!), but I don’t think association with a shooter need be one of them.

It's because he was picking up fares in between killings.

It just seems superfluous. Him being an Uber driver seems inconsequential. It wasn’t the factor enabling him. From what we can tell it wasn’t the motivation behind it (i.e., he targeting his passengers).

“In the end, I ask people, because I keep hearing this question of why, ‘What would be the answer that would be an acceptable answer for you?’ They have to think about it for a moment, and they say, ‘Probably nothing,” Fuller said. “I have to say, ‘You are probably correct.’ I can’t imagine what the answer would be that would let us go, ‘OK, we understand now.’ Because we are not going to understand.”

    Wow, that’s a wise man.

“County Sheriff Richard Fuller is pessimistic that any motive that prosecutors do determine will offer any sort of clarity.”

I think “He’s just a crazy-ass motherfucker” is going to have to do it for this one.

Until or unless Dalton gets an official diagnosis, can we please stop automatically assuming that, because he killed and maimed a bunch of people, he was mentally ill?

Mentally ill people are far more more likely to be the victims of violence than to be violent towards others. They are more likely even, than the general population. And they already face enough misunderstanding and fear from people as it is without us continuing the narrative that “violent people are mentally ill”, and “mentally ill people are violent”.

O just shut it, well balanced mentally sound people do not go on random killing sprees. No one thinks that all mentally ill people are psychos like this guy, but all psychos like this guy are mentally ill.
