The TV news this morning was (I think) trying to make this point, subtly. They said more than once that the guy passed a background check, as if saying that would lead people to think, “The system doesn’t work!” Like I did. I wonder how well it sunk in.

The reality is that you can’t win with the pro-gun crowd. If someone who would currently not be allowed to obtain a gun commits a crime with a gun, it’s “Restrictions won’t work! Criminals will always find illegal ways to get guns!” If someone who would currently be allowed to obtain a gun commits a crime with a gun, it’s “Restrictions won’t work! They’ll never catch people who seem fine but are secretly preparing to do something bad!”

The only solution, which the entire rest of the developed world has already settled on, is to drastically reduce the availability of guns to everyone - no one should have an easy time acquiring a firearm, whether or not they seem “normal” or “disturbed” or whatever. Unfortunately, I seriously doubt we’re ever going to reach that conclusion.

In my ideal world, private gun ownership would be practically restricted out of existence, but that tweet pretty much sums up my take on things. The pro-control crowd when it comes to gun rights has lost this fight, for a generation at the least.

When you have no national lobby for gun control (an anti-NRA as it were), you have little chance of winning support outside of a few diehard gun control “advocates” (Fienstien, Boxer, any NY/NJ/MD legislator).

“Litmus test” is one of my pet peeves. Litmus tests measure the acid/base qualities of something between 1-14. People use the phrase to mean a test of something binary or true/false. The use above is nonsensical. Would you say “It’s a litmus test on guns, and they scored 3 out of 14"? What does that mean?

Good point. Since we can’t have a perfect system there is no reason to make things better.

This is the depressing situation about gun control. While obviously more steps should be taken (however difficult), it won’t really make that much of a difference. Most people can get a gun. Unless we get rid of guns, incidents like this can easily happen. Having a gun wouldn’t have stopped the victims from being killed (also that’s a terrible argument and would bring us back to the Wild West) and MOST gun deaths (being killed by a mass shooting, while prevalent, is unlikely) are suicide. You are most likely to be killed by yourself or someone you know with a gun. Unless we get rid of them, very little will change.

I personally think we could drastically improve the situation without attempting to completely get rid of guns. Universal background checks, better communication between fed and state so the background checks are reliable, more ways to fail a background check (not everyone with a history of violence is a felon, and being a felon is pretty much the only way to fail), registration so illegally sold arms can be tracked back to the purchaser, a mandatory safety class for firearm ownership, a safe storage law to hold the grossly negligent responsible when their kid shoots themselves or someone else, and universal healthcare. After that it comes down to becoming less violent as a nation. Another step I would advocate for is, when I was applying for my pistol permit I had to provide 4 character references to write me letters of recommendation... If you don't know 4 people, not in your immediate family, who think you'd be safe with a gun, you probably shouldn't have one.

of the 30,000 gun deaths per year; 20,000 are suicides, not accidental gun deaths, suicides. The majority of those who try to commit suicide do not try again, (so most of these people will not have a history or any way of indicating they should not have a gun), if you’re willing to let 20,000 people die, even with all the other laws working perfectly, every year, then fine. I don’t think it’s worth it.

Well, it’s not there’s anything than could have prevented this! He had a gun, but more importantly, he was driving around! In a car! Did you know that cars are responsible for more deaths than guns every year? It was an unstoppable combination, and hopefully will never happen again.

According to the nonsense I read on Gizmodo, banning cars would have prevented this shooting.

Should we not ALSO be having a thoughtful discussion about the distinct lack of readily available affordable mental-health care ?? Just askin’ ppl.

Obama did put $500m for mental health care in his latest “assault on the 2nd amendment”, but I’m sure no one at the NRA noticed.

Whoever manufactured Dalton’s gun needn’t care either because they have no legal liability for mass shootings.

The somewhat flawed logic here is that you are essentially suing the manufacturer for the object in question performing as advertised. I can’t sue Subaru for a car that starts everyday and gets me where I want to go.

I can only sue Subaru if the brakes or steering were faulty. That doesn’t stop our sue happy society from filing free payday lawsuits but hopefully judges see through the BS.
