Not really seeing where Demi’s blaming feminists? Besides, I thought we were all in agreement that after this ruling, the only way Kesha would be able to receive what she wants is through pressure on Sony from inside the industry itself.

Because instead of railing on the system of patriarchy and mistreatment of survivors, Demi decides to use her voice to send 5 tweets on how feminists aren’t doing a good enough job of defending each other.

That doesn’t make her argument illegitimate. Not to mention, she does lightly address the mistreatment of survivors in her first tweet; she seems to propose more advocacy from other feminists (male or female) in order to alleviate this problem.

Demi’s no feminist scholar, but her points are still valid. Yes, they’re basic, but they serve to remind feminists to do something they already should be doing. Feminism can be self-critiquing, it isn’t only about constantly revoking patriarchy; it’s a complex movement that is capable of doing multiple things at once.

I am confused about the Kesha thing and I can't find info so I'm asking here. I read that Sony wouldn't release her from her contract but is allowing her to work with another producer, so she won't have contact with Dr. Luke. Is this not a good compromise? Did Kesha alleged wrongdoing on the part of other Sony execs? Is Sony blocking her from putting out music? Can someone explain?

I guess because she’s under his imprint he’ll still get the credit/recompense. Sony’s position is that their goals aren’t mutually exclusive but she fears that Sony will tank her efforts.

For those of us under the impression that the actual people who failed Kesha were her abuser, her record label, a corrupt judicial system that values corporate interests over personal safety—we were wrong! The real people at fault? Feminists!

Thank you. Unfortunately it’s easier and more fun to blame women than the men and system who actually screwed Kesha over.

Tweets and hashtags are unlikely to solve any of this.

That “system” does include women. Ignoring that doesn’t strike me as a good call for the sake of women.

I don’t think the snark towards Demi Lovato’s tweets was really necessary. Those pictures of Kesha were pretty heartbreaking. I think the snark should be reserved for “feminist” musicians who are saying nothing about the situation.

Agreed. I am not a fan of this article’s tone at all. Big names, especially those who proclaim to be feminist, need to be speaking out. Feminism is more than “girl power” and “squads.” It’s not detracting from the larger issue. It’s a part of the larger issue.
