Did you have grits? I’d had them in the past and never liked them. Then I had some maple-flavored grits with walunuts in them up here and lost my mind.

I also used to love sweet tea, but after drinking ice tea without sugar for years and years, now, I can’t really stomach real and true Souther-style sweet tea.

I thought Romney was the last republican who was going to try and win with just white people.

Guess they didn’t get the RNC memo.

They tried to appeal to Latinos and failed. Rubio and Bush were supposed to carry out that plan and bring the status quo their victory. But the Latinos knew they were being played and the base revolted because they are in turns racist and nationalistic, believing that the resources of the state should not be shared with the undeserving.

They didn’t count on Trump. Trump was the fly in the ointment and he did all of us a service by revealing just how awful the dark side of conservatism really is.

It’s like the South African National Party, but with nicer accents, bless their hearts.

No, but seriously, It Gets Better. Someday, the parties won’t be so racially polarized. In this case, that’s largely up to where the GOP wants to go. The ball is in their court on this one.

It’s always a bit funny they lay out their “diverse” group of candidates this cycle (nevermind that Hillary would be the first woman president and Bernie the first Jewish president, but I digress), but their voters are the same as they ever were. It’s worse than it being the other way around, quite honestly.

When people say that the GOP is dying, this is what they’re talking about, whether they know it or not. Think about the impact on this country of the recent death of just one old, white republican—”Justice” Scalia. The repubs in the red states can pass all the shitty laws they want to now, but they won’t be upheld by SCOTUS. Also, biological evolution is a real thing. Most of these white people live very unhealthy lifestyles. They overeat, they over-medicate, and they constantly play with firearms. In short, they’ve failed to adapt, so they’re out of here! The wheels of evolution grind slowly, but they grind exceedingly fine.

I think they’re outnumbered by the zillions of us in student loan debt that are hating the status quo of killing the middle class. You just happen to work in an industry tailored to draw in assholes. And for that, you have my condolences.

BTW, as if it even needs to be said, but there is nothing inherently wrong with being old and white in Charleston or anywhere else. The problem rises when you believe your the only folks that matter, or that you matter most.

America will begin to work a bit better when this particular subset of folks agree on some basic things with the rest of us, namely that there is such a thing as society outside of your own (both national an international), and that if you don’t want to live in a banana republic, you won’t pick up a pitchfork - hell, who am I kidding? In America, it’s your gun - when the state asks you to contribute a bit more to the maintenance of this society.

This whole Fortress America/America the Island thing isn’t working out so great, guys. There is not a wall high enough or a moat deep enough to keep out the world, folks. Instead of yelling about building a wall; not around your hearts, along the southern border, or at a TSA line. Why not try breaking down some of your own walls, first?

Good call. I never even saw that guy! I was thinking about one of the more scruffy dudes. However, how ‘bout that one white lady, 50's-ish, in the second row, looking at everybody’s hands? Hmmm.....

Wow. People defending the party choosing between two old white people are going to attack the party choosing between two (by political standards) young, Hispanic children of immigrants and a black brain surgeon for being old and white. Bold strategy Cotton, let’s see if it pays off for them.

The typical Gawker reader has created their own narrative about how the GOP is dying and only old while people support it. In reality, GOP support is steadily increasing among white and Hispanic college graduates. Younger conservatives don’t really support Trump, they support more moderate candidates.

You must break this news to Gawker readers carefully, lest you damage their psyche. Their world views are twisted by political blog and social media echo chambers.

Are the young people and the non-white people at Trump’s rally democrats?

Seems like if the general election hinges on old white people voting, we don’t have much to worry about in terms of getting out that vote for the democrat candidate. But if we want to get young people excited enough to actually go out and vote without President Obama on the ballot, we have more work to do.

“Are the young people and the non-white people at Trump’s rally democrats?”

Very possibly. Remember the black woman who was reading at a Trump rally? Johari Osayi said that she was allowed to sit behind Trump, even encouraged to do so, and she suspected it was because there were so few people of color there.
