And though your time there is mostly harmless fun, there’s always something a little off about the experience. For your cousin, it’s when [S]he screams at the dog.

    This gives me chills.

ETA: This is an amazing article.

God, so much this!! Weren’t we just talking about all the cishet men dressing up as women on Lip Sync Battle and how irksome it is?

I hate that “acting like a girl” is still an acceptable punchline.

And I don’t like...LOVE Jimmy Fallon or anything, but most of his shit is just kind and silly...except this. I’ve never watched one of these. I think Kimmel is very mean spirited and Fallon is just sort of...bland and sure...board games are fun enough...

I feel like we don’t disagree much, but I like Kimmel! The executive producer running the show is a super smart, awesome woman which is great. Fallon bores me to tears. Like I'm sure he'd be a fun friend but yeesh is he blah.

Glad to see someone defending young, blond white girls!

    #silentmajority

ETA: Is it possible he’s making fun of a certain TYPE of teenage girl, not teenage girls on the whole? The same way people make fun of “jocks,” but nobody’s offended that they’re making fun of teenage boys at large?

Because everyone knows that you can ONLY defend one group so it better be the MOST disadvantaged group.

He thinks it’s funny for a straight man to wear a dress and a wig, to speak like a drunk baby, and to jump up and down with a limp wrist after seeing a friend.

I wish it were so, but male comedians—almost ALL of them who have their own shows/stand-up acts/movies, etc—seem to find this kind of stuff inherently funny and have since the beginning of comedy. Not just white ones.

You know, along with the lisping, mincing gay guy (thanks Martin Lawrence/Eddie Murphy/Dane Cook/Wayans Brothers/Adam Sandler/every other guy out there.)

Don’t get me wrong, IT CAN BE DONE WELL. But usually it’s just a man in a wig and a dress and heels going “isn’t it funny that my voice is higher????” and I’m often left waiting for the actual joke.

Yeah I was gonna say...it’s really not that deep.

And yeah, a lot of teen girls are like this. I tutored a 14 year old and she and her friends are EXACTLY like this. Sure there are inspirational and exceptional teen girls. The operative word being “exceptional.”

This kind of smacks of stick in the mud, outrage echo chamber.

On what earth are all- or even most- teenage girls desperate to understand the voting system and systemic inequalities? Has Bobby ever talked to more than one teenage girl in his life?

Unpopular opinion—I’ve never found Jimmy Fallon funny.

I get why he’s endearing and charming and sort of cute in that boy-who-never-grew-into-a-man sort of way, but never funny. It’s all awkward laughter and childish antics and “let’s play this game/do this skit that seems like it should be fun but really it seems tedious.” He seems to be someone who is perpetually surrounded by people funnier than him, and just feeds off of their energy.

And by feeds I mean somehow consumes their essence and manages to convince America that it’s him making the jokes.

I just want to understand you, Jimmy. Let me in?

No, that’s a relatively popular opinion, just not one among NBC executives, who consider a constantly smirking humor-vortex to be the ideal standard-bearer of its late-night line-up.

I agree that the guy in drag is not funny when there are no real jokes like Fallon. It does have a tradition in theater and I will make the exception for something like Monty Python’s Pepperpots.

The thing with the Pythons in drag is that they were genuinely funny. They just happened to be dressed as women.

Same with Kids in the Hall. Half the time they were dressed as women, but the joke was never the fact that they were dressed as women.
