I’ve said it for years, for something called ‘Silent Majority’ they certainly never shut the fuck up.

That’s because the idea of a silent majority is a silly one.

There’s no need to be vocal when you control everything already. The silence is called contentment.

There’s certainly a “silence” to these folks. I live my social life in 4-year increments. I’ll make acquaintances for three years and all of a sudden I learn, sometime around election time, how incredibly fucked up a lot of people are. Their silence is there — it’s just embarrassing to sit there and talk about how crappy you are as a person. So they wait until it's "acceptable" to do so.

This notion that the next justice has to have Scalia’s temperment is infuriating. Clarence Thomas replaced Thurgood Fucking Marshall.

This isn’t just a matter of moving goalposts — this is shredding the goalposts in a chipper, making you reassemble the goalposts with nothing but chewing gum, and then telling you to put the goalposts on Mars when you’re done.

Who says just because Scalia’s dead he can’t serve on the Court? Can’t we just get Alito or one of his clerks to shove a fist up his carcass and Weekend at Bernie’s this shit ‘til Jan. 2017, 2021, 2025, indefinitely?

I blame the media, which refuses to call out Republican BS and thereby makes totally new ‘rules’ into established precedent, e.g. requiring super majorities to pass legislation, presidents are not allowed to appoint judges in their fourth year, etc.

Just the other day I heard someone say that Obama is supposed to replace Scalia with another rightwing justice in order to maintain the Court’s supposedly “traditional” 3-3-3 balance between rightwingers, centrists, and leftwingers. I’m sure conservatives are prepared to circulate this lie until it becomes an accepted fact.

A broken clock is right twice a day.

I say this in reference to the “movement” at play on the democratic side. Not to her ridiculous nonsense about not nominating a supreme court judge.

Word on the street is test ads are being focus grouped in DC about Sanders for the general. The results are pretty catastrophic.

But then, every generation needs its George McGovern.

George McGovern was a totally different situation. In 1972 there were 3 strong Democrats who could have beaten Nixon according to the polls. At least 2 of those strong candidates were taken down by Watergate-style dirty tricks (I won't include Ted Kennedy because he took himself down.) So by the time of the Democratic convention there was no front-runner left and the Dems were looking for any sacrificial lamb they could get. Somehow McGovern got talked into it, and he became the sacrifice. This year, Bernie Sanders is not a sacrificial lamb, there's no GOP president running for a 2nd term, and we haven't discovered any Watergate dirty tricks yet. But there's still time, let's see what develops.

I don’t disagree. I hew more closely to Sanders than Clinton on the issues (especially wealth inequality, tax policy, foreign affairs, and criminal justice), but within about 10 minutes of hearing of Scalia’s death and knowing the shitshow that’s to come (complete with the possibility of a nominee not being confirmed) I started to swing to Hillary. Anyone who thinks Sanders isn’t vulnerable to the kind of awful, hacky, horseshit attacks that will come his way from whatever shitheel wins the republican nomination is just fooling him or herself. For starters (and the easiest one) is to call Sanders a socialist. (Spare me the definition. The problem isn’t that the charge is right or wrong or what it means.) The fact that he’s going to have to try to educate middle of the road voters in swing states that it’s not bad or evil to be a socialist dooms him from the start. We’ve been fighting the semantics of “socialism” for 8 years with President Obama and most people (tons of voters) are still completely stupid about it.

Is this part of the republican shtick of “why won’t the president work across the aisle and unite the country”? While they become atomic explosions at the thought of agreeing on the color of the sky with him?

President Obama should make an executive order declaring the Earth to be round, and watch their heads explode as they all quickly jump on flat Earth forums to get talking points.

BREAKING NEWS: President Obama announces that all Republicans are valuable and should be treasured. He adds that whenever a prominent conservative like Justice Antonin Scalia dies, Obama feels terrible, weeps like a baby and considers renouncing the office of President. He worries about the consequences to his health if, say, a large number of conservatives suddenly die in brutal murder-suicide pacts. President Obama says he dearly wishes and hopes this never happens and is proposing legislation to prevent republican gun owners from turning their weapons on themselves and their families. “As president, I will do EVERYTHING in my power to keep republicans alive and prevent their suicides,” added Mr. Obama.

Ferfuckssake conservatives: You get to control two houses of congress, pretty much the supreme court (footnotes noted), and a vast majority of state legislatures—you don’t ALSO get the ideological version of affirmative action.

‘Cause that idea? That idea you’re constantly hinting about? That religious folk and/or conservative churches writ large should have some sort of special, unelected, Second-Estate/House of Lords-style set of levers-of-power? That’s not America you’re talking about, that’s Iran.

The U.S. scares me, honestly. Historically, I’m reminded of the build-up to the Spanish Civil War—rigid, reactionary Christian conservatism opposed to liberal, republican secular values (and, of course, the reactionaries won). All of the GOP candidates this time around could have a seat at the table of Francoist fascism. The rhetoric and legislative paralysis have become so bad that I could entirely see things go down the road to a second civil war.
