Right? The position of the Catholic church on abortion is not surprising, but their continued refusal to allow birth control is baffling.

Contraceptives are EXACTLY the solution to not wanting to get pregnant.

Both my and MrStu’s family are heavily Catholic. They keep telling us how we need to come back into the fold, celebrate our faith - it’s okay to disagree on “a few minor points.”

Fuck it. FUCK IT. If you aren’t part of the solution, you’re part of the problem. I refuse to willfully subjugate myself to people who think I’m unholy enough as a woman to be a representative to God. Who want to force a life of pain for both mother and child that could be prevented. Who allowed years of abuse on those same dear children they claim to see as beautiful little sprites of Godliness. Screw them all.

Yes. It is like when republicans say that we shouldn’t treat abortion as a critical voting issue. We should just be able to look past that (to all of their other shitty policies). If abortion isn’t a big deal, they should drop it.

THANK YOU. I would never say it to their faces, but I am continually confused by the good and educated people I know who stay with the Catholic Church. All my Protestant friends are on board with their faith- they either go to a liberal leaning church, or if they go to a traditional one, they’re open about supporting “traditional” things (gays bad/abortion worse). But the Catholics I know by and far disagree with their faith way more than any Protestant, but for some weird reason still stay. I wish they’d wake up and start being consistent with their own morals, and for the Church’s membership to reflect how many people *really* believe that crap.

I don’t fucking understand how they can endorse “natural family planning”, while disfavoring birth control. MOTHER FUCKERS IT DOES THE SAME THING FOR THE SAME REASONS, ONLY NOT AS EFFECTIVELY.

Like, am I fucking crazy? Or what?

No see it's okay if you use math and biology (i.e. not doing it when you could get pregnant) but NO using physics and chemistry (condoms and birth control).

Hmmm, I bet if zika virus caused men to develop erectile dysfunction, the church might rethink its position on medical intervention. Oh boy, imagine if that were the case, but women were asymptomatic carriers and it could ONLY be transmitted to males through sexual contact and also caused your dick to fall off? The Vatican would be handing out condoms like they were going out of style. #coolpopenotthatcool

      That makes...no sense.

The church didn’t shift it’s position on contraception and abortion after the AIDS crisis, either. Or even after centuries of knowing about STIs and how they affected children born to people carrying disease.

Syphilis has been a scourge that killed millions of men, who were catching it from prostitutes mainly in the distant past. They never said, “hey, guys, we hate it but, since we’re all in the patriarchy together, could you wrap it up? kthnxbye!” They said, “hey, maybe stop fucking around? don’t infect your wife and your future children”

I’m not defending them. Just saying your example doesn’t fit the facts of how they’ve reacted in the past.

No, but the point is people love pointing out how Pope Francis is so progressive on everything. He isn’t. He’s only “progressive” on men’s issues. He basically said it’s okay to be gay, so the logical conclusion is condom use among gay men is not as big of a no no as it is among straight couples. Men are more likely to transmit HIV to women than vice versa (just the way the virus works). Abortion, female clergy, basically anything that applies exclusively or strongly to women, he has kept with the church position. Whatever, it’s the Catholic church, no surprise, but he’s not the Bernie Sanders of Catholicism as people would like to believe.

but don’t these same women have a marital obligation to have sex whenever their husbands demand it? I’m pretty sure The Church doesn’t recognize marital rape as something that can actually happen.

Honey, God never gives you more than you can handle, and each precious child with an underdeveloped brain is a gift from Him. He is giving these parents the glorious opportunity to struggle to support a child with severe cranial damage. He personally blessed those mosquitoes and sent them out to bite poor pregnant women to they might experience this joy.

Oh yes, because god works in mysterious ways and ALL life matters, regardless of how much a toll it’ll take on extremely low income parents (who probably already have kids and are struggling enough as it is) to provide adequate lifelong care for children born with microcephaly.

The way the Catholic Church fosters poverty and subhuman living conditions through the dissemination of their “faith” is just beyond disgusting.

This is wholly unrealistic. Much of what the Vatican has in terms of art is literally priceless-who is gonna pony up the cash for the Pieta? How will they sell the ceiling of a chapel? It is just not feasible. That aside, the Pope can't sell it as none of it is his; it belongs to the Church. He might be the head of the Church but he can't sell the Vatican art collection.
