I’M SORTA CLOSE ENOUGH TO GO TO THE CHICAGO ONE!

    I may actually go.

I mean I doubt it, but I could.

Just make sure it’s actually in Chicago and not on a barge in the middle of Lake Michigan.

Maybe Gawker could charter a bus, and all us actual NYC dwellers could take a road trip to Kristin’s “NYC” book signing.

Is... that a long way for a New Yorker? Does it actually take 2 hours to go that far? I live in New Mexico. Traveling ~30 miles (something I do frequently to reach the nearest shopping area that’s not utter garbage/WalMart) takes me less than 30 minutes on the highway. A friend of mine lives in a much bigger city in another state, and I’m always baffled at his total unwillingness to travel more than 2 miles to do ANYTHING. Best restaurant in town is 5 miles out? Nope, can’t do it, pick one of the other 50 joints within a mile. Bitch, I drive 10 miles every time I have to go to the grocery store. Is this distorted sense of scale universal to large-city dwellers?

So first the really good news: I found a rescue to take the little guy I found over the weekend. It broke my heart to give him up — he’s quite possibly the sweetest dog I’ve ever met, and he was so attached to me — but the woman fostering him is wonderful, and I’m SO glad I was able to take him to a home instead of a cage. Some of you lovely people were asking for the rescue name so you could donate — it’s Mutt Hut Rescue, http://www.mutthutrescues.org/ or https://www.facebook.com/MuttHutRescueL…

Now the really bad news: My dog Buster was badly mauled by another dog this morning. There’s a husky mix who lives down the street from us who has always had a thing with Buster — she barks and snarls and lunges at him every time we pass each other on the street, and goes crazy when she’s out on the balcony when we walk by. This morning her owners opened their front door just as we walked past, and she dashed out the door and grabbed Buster by the chest with her teeth.

It’s not as bad as it could be — no ribs broken and his lung wasn’t punctured, but he has a deep wound and a lot of bruising, he’s terrified and in a lot of pain, and he’ll have to stay at the hospital for at least the next 24 hours for observation, antibiotics and pain medication. Plus he bit me while I was trying to separate them, because I got him right in the wound and he reacted on instinct, so now he’s going to have to be quarantined, though apparently I can quarantine him at home — I’m not sure how that works. It’ll be 10 days if the dog that bit him had up-to-date rabies vaccinations, and 30 if not.

Everybody please think good thoughts in both our directions? Both for quick and as painless as possible healing for Buster, and that the other dog’s owners will be able to afford to cover his medical care. Between the Xrays and the tests and the meds and the hospital stay, even if they don’t have to do anything else and can let him out tomorrow morning, it’s going to be a minimum of $1,600. So this is just awful on a whole lot of levels.

Oh I’ll pray for Buster! Or I did already, I should say. Why don’t your neighbors keep the husky on a leash? That is the very least any responsible pet owner can do! I hope your boy gets better fast and that your crappy neighbors have the money and decency to pay for the vet bill.

I know just how hard it is to give rescues up, once you're found a suitable home - I've rescued a few litters of abandoned kittens, hand-feeding them until weaned, only to give them up as I found suitable homes for them ...

      Good stuff - you’re a caring person!
