But that didn’t completely eliminate the perceived racism. Having those friends just made the white man seem less racist than if he had no Asian friends.

    “Less racist.” So... still racist?

Everyone is a little racist. It’s not a bad thing as long as you acknowledge it and don’t let your biases guide your actions.

Hamilton Nolan is a racist evidenced by his talking down to black people when addressing BLM shutting down a Bernie Sanders rally.

Gawker Media is racist because they have a lily white masthead, and this includes writers and editors.

Gawker writers are willing to publicly grouse against their employer about him interfering with “editorial freedom” (a freedom that if allowed to go unchecked would tank this publication, but that’s another discussion) but not at the fact that there are no black people writing for Gawker proper?

Now, mount a coherent defense against these charges without using self-serving argument. You can’t. It’s impossible, because attempting to defend yourself is by definition, self-serving.

Which to me is the bigger problem with the moniker of “you’re a racist” in 2016. There is literally nowhere to go in the discussion from there that the people hurling it haven’t come up with some sort of airtight response to.

There is no defensive angle in which the conversation can go. A tactic people avoid at all costs is the “maybe you’re right and that does come off as racist although it wasn’t intended to be...” That will completely disarm anyone. Along another person racist.

Not really, the correct response is: “I’m sorry that I hurt you. What have I done to appear racist and how can I correct it?”

So I had a discussion with a friend about this. As a white person, how do you actually defend yourself if someone says you are racist? Say I’m in love with a black man (which I am) and I say that then it opens up a whole can if I say that. I can’t say I have black friends because that gets eyerolls and the usual reaction. I can’t say I support Black Lives Matter because then people say I have “white guilt” - I can’t be offended because then I am told I don’t understand what being a “we” v. being an individual means. I definitely can’t do anything to help Africa. I can’t build a school, I can’t do the volunteer tourist thing because that’s just bad. According to Kanye I can’t even comment on black music. I honestly don’t know what to do. Granted, it doesn’t come up (probably because I don’t say or think stupid shit). But given the climate in politics and society right now (going back forever, I know)... I just wish I could help more. I think being involved with a black man sort of makes me feel worse. There is this feeling that I will just never, ever, ever know what it’s like. No matter how much I say, yes I see how the system is rigged and yes I admit I might benefit from that (I do, I’m sure)... how do I change “the system” other than by being a decent person and pointing out awful?

Simple: don’t use anecdotal evidence “my best friend is black” to prove/confirm anything since it only proves/confirms that your best friend is black

It certainly seems counter productive, from a white point of view, to exclude the racial majority from assisting with inclusion and privilege, #notyourfight or whatever. But to a great degree the current trend seems to be one of reclaiming lost dignity — to forge a seperate culture, rather than attempt integration. I’d love to help, but we’re not really invited. I’ll just keep checking my privilege.

In other words, the world’s most annoying and transparently self-serving tactic for shielding oneself from charges of racism is, in fact, effective.

A far worse defense I’ve heard from an ex-boss: “I minored in Black Studies and I can tell you that ALL blacks think alike.”

How do you even unpack that statement? No sane person could actually believe that.

However, the fact that he reduced the myriad possible thoughts that an entire race of human beings could have into one monolithic essence tells you everything you would need to know about him.

I created a website called My Black Friend® a while back that did just this. For a small fee, you send us a photo of yourself in one of several poses and we insert a black person into the photo, which is suitable for posting on Facebook, keeping your wallet, etc. For an additional payment, we could also have a friend call you and either leave a message or talk to you on speakerphone, or we had actors who would accompany you in person to events and entertain your friends with the vast and not-at-all race-based experiences you two have had. We also offered My Asian Friend, My Latino Friend and My Gay Friend.

True story, I had a college study friend who started spouting racist comments as soon as she got a black boyfriend, then the N Word became commonplace and I had to walk away from it all...
