I like the 1% of Ben Carson voters who also think whites are the superior race.

You could be a racist in the vein of The Bell Curve, believing that whites are on average superior, but sill acknowledging that the most talented, qualified candidate for president is in this case an outlier on one of the non-white bell curves.

South Carolina is a flat out beautiful state and the people there are extremely friendly on a personal level. Break down in the middle of nowhere, you’ll get people practically offering to put you up for the night. That said, yeah, the politics are fucked up beyond belief.

If you’re straight and white. That’s an important thing to note. Because many people are not those things.

Goddammit, Flow Bee. Stop trying to make “privilege” a thing. As an affluent white male, I know for a FACT that it doesn’t exist. Sheesh!!

Wowow. 21% of people in this poll outright are not sure that all races (and thus all humans) are created equal. And only half believe in religious freedom. I’m an atheist and I don’t believe any religion should be “illegal.” And I’m the hateful one destroying this country?

That really is truly terrifying. Can I just pretend none of these people exist?

To Ben Carson’s credit (?), the vast majority of his supporters as compared to the others are happy that the North won the Civil War. You know, to ensure that we remained one nation that did not practice slavery.

So I guess he can really claim to have the smart ones.

How many are unsure of how to spell Capitol?

My expectations for people are so low, I momentarily thought 36% opposing a national database sounded hopeful.

I scrolled too quickly and somehow visually merged Q26 and Q23 into “Do you support or oppose hanging Muslims on the capital grounds?” Probably SC’s next ballot initiative.

The main problem with the South is the prevailing belief that admitting they were ever wrong about anything harms the honor of their dead relatives more than it harms anyone alive today.

When they shout about “heritage”, they’re not just talking about a general affinity for old timey things. They’re really saying that they can’t process any belief or act that shits all over what generations of their family stood for / accepted as normal, as they perceive it as a source of genuine harm.

can somebody find me a breakdown of how many people living in former confederate states actually had relatives fight in the “war of northern aggression”? the area was primarily an agrarian economy and sparsely populated — about 22 million lived in the north, with only 9 million in the south. LOADS of people have moved to places like nc and georgia in the last few decades to work in tech and finance, so their great-great-grandpappies were nowhere near sherman’s march.

Beyond personal connections, the South has cultivated, or rather, perpetuated an Us vs. Them mindset with the North.

The Confederacy, segregation, etc are all wrapped-up in this never ending victim complex. Where they see the North as a force of constant humiliation and enemy to their way of life.

I mean, they still use the word “Yankee” unironically in 2016.

The truly sad thing is that they don’t get / care that the North isn’t interested in their honor or refighting arguments from decades / century+ in the past. It’s like some kid on the playground angry that you broke their LEGO building three grades ago.

It means absolutely everything to them, but everyone else is really weirded out and hopes they get over it soon.

I’m from a Northern State and I’m not happy the Union won the Civil War. We could have been free of all of these wackadoodles if we’d just thrown a few battles and let them go.

17% of SC voters are undecided on barbecue sauce preference! WTF???

Also, Bush and Carson supporters are much less likely to like tomato based sauces than other candidates’ supporters. There’s a story there.

The question was not specific enough because it did not specify the meat the sauce was going on. Sure, a tomato based sauce is fine on some beef. But your pork better come with a vinegar based sauce.

Marco Rubio has the most supporters who are unsure about white supremacy.

Well, it’s difficult to claim a race of human beings as superior when you support a machine to lead your country.

Support a national database of Muslims in the U.S.? Who would have thought those 70 year old IBM Hollerith punchcard routines would be useful again?

Really, why the cost-effective half measures? Surely we could also find some way to spot them in public. The Trump Signature line could easily get its Chinese manufacturers to start punching out yellow felt crescent patches.
