Good, the Cuban embargo was an embarrassment, and the travel restrictions ridiculous. More than anything I support whatever pisses off the Cuban political power machine of SoFla.

The embargo remains in place and the travel restrictions still exist.

Technically all this announcement means is that American Airlines, JetBlue, and others, who already (for many years now) fly to Cuba many times a day, can do so as regularly scheduled commercial flights, and not as “special charters” which they couldn’t market under their own brand names. Seriously, there are already dozens of flights a day, in American commerical aircraft. But they are really hard to book, because you have to go through travel agents. Now, you’ll (presumably) be able to buy tickets online on airline websites themselves.

But you (an American citizen who isn’t a student, journalist, politician, educator, etc.) still can’t technically travel to Cuba for general tourism or business. Obama has vastly loosened the restrictions, so you can claim your trip is for something like “cultural exchange”, and you can be covered under a “general license” rather than having to apply for special licenses every time. But you still legally can’t take a beach vacation in Cuba. Technically.

As a Miamian, I am looking forward to visiting Cuba one day. And bitching at the all the Spanish speaking shopkeepers who can’t understand my English.

I’m sure Marco Rubio will shortly express his righteous outrage at this news. I expect that his statement in this regard will be something like: “Barack Obama knows exactly what he’s doing...”

By the time I get to Cuba it will be all McDonalds and Starbucks. I’ve always wanted to have cocktails on a beach side restaurant with a lineup that includes Castro, Oliver Stone, William Kennedy and one of Sam Giancanna’s wheel men while listening to Guantanamera, any version pre 1970.
