replace “Definitely, Maybe” with Downton Abbey binge viewing and you have mine as well.

FOLKS, a freezing-cold Valentine’s day calls for cozy, heavy food and drink, which means that Dan Savage’s wise advice to fuck first is as important as ever. Sex first, dinner second. Nobody wants to bang with a bellyful of brie, steak, wine, chocolate lava cake, and boozy hot chocolate.

Yeahh. I’m doing fondue, so I’m probably going to be opting for the “morning sex” option.

I used to do statistical analysis for health services...9 months after a cold snap, always a spike in the birth rate. Got to keep warm somehow!

I always wondered if there was a statistically significant spike in birth rates in the first half of November. (Babies conceived on Valentines Day)

Not as much of one as you’d think (in the UK anyway). There’s moderately more than the average number of babies born in the middle of November.

By far the most births are in late September/early October, 9 months after the Xmas and New Year holidays. This is in part for much the same reasons as for after cold snaps; people spending more time indoors together than they usually would and less access to regular and emergency contraceptive providers due to closure and/or difficulty travelling. Also, over the holidays, alcohol is usually flowing, encouraging caution and pants to be thrown to the wind!

Dude! The sexiest Valentines are had when it is cold! It’s an excuse to strip down and get under some blankets (especially if you have a fire place). It’s much harder to have a classically romantic setting if both of you are dripping in humidified sweat because it’s like Satan’s asshole outside.

If I celebrated Valentines day, that is the way I would do it.

YASSSS! I’m so excited to build a fire and snuggle with my 4 & 3 year olds (who love fire) and watch something moderately Child-Friendly(!)™ that I haven’t seen 1000 times (I’m looking at you, Anna and Elsa)....

ERRR....I mean, snuggle in front of the fire with my hot sexy hunka-hunka-burning-love, my husband!

      IM ROMANTICAL, I SWEAR.

That sounds adorable! What moderately child-friendly movie are you forcing upon your spawn? I recommend the Emperor’s New Groove, if only because it’s on Netflix and I was watching it last night. I laugh every time.

I am endlessly sad I have no reason to purchase that glorious piece of clothing.

But instead I am spending valentine’s day in Santa Monica, at an Irish Pub, drinking beer and eating fried food and getting away with a light coat.

Because it might be slightly breezy but it’ll also be 82 degrees.

You all may hate me now.

Oh I had. I plan to laugh and drink my delicious beer as they run by. All of LA is going to be a shitshow this weekend for about half a dozen reasons, so really it doesn’t matter where you are and where you're going, it's gonna take a while. *shrug* that's what drinking is for :)

My plans consist of blankets, tea, pillows, tea, and The Walking Dead. Nothing says romance like drama, death, and bloody machetes.

Yes, I think so. And my usual half-price chocolate grab next week will now be referred to as a “supply run.”

Every kiss might begin with Kay, but I’m hoping my night begins with Carol Kicking Ass.

We have a fireplace and can make hot toddies. I think we will be fine.

I might also bake. Baking warms up the house.

Baking on Valentine’s Day is the best.

I learned that if I overwhelm someone with dinner and dessert they won’t care I haven’t learned to make a heart (or any recognizable shape) with decorative icing.

My grandmother died a few days ago, and it was very unexpected. It really puts things in perspective. All I want to do this weekend is make brownies, read a little, and stay in bed. All my energy for doing any sort of Valentine’s activity is totally zapped. Sorry to be a downer, just wanted to chime in! Hope there’s a Saturday Night Social tomorrow.

I think that making brownies is a lot of effort after losing a loved one. But, if it brings you comfort, too, then definitely do it. I hope there’s SNS, too, because it’s my favorite even though it’s already Sat evening here.

Anyway, I am sorry for your loss. I’ll look for you when we get to SNS.
