First, I think this is horrible and I’m glad it is reported. I think any time there are racists on a campus it should be made as public as possible. That being said, I honestly am no sure if you should discipline individuals for getting in a verbal fight and saying horrible stuff. Are we not supposed to be treating college students as adults and how to survive in the actual world? This is horrible, but if several adults got into a fight and one group yelled racial slurs at the other, it would not result in any criminal charge. Because, it is a free speech issue, at least it is unless the speech actually incites some sort of violence. I am not in any way condoning this as “ok”, but I also am not sure we should apply different standards of what qualifies as criminal to college students than we do to adults. But that goes across the board as well. For example, the way college campuses generally engage in rape investigations does not follow criminal procedures and is a bullshit administrative process. I guess I’m just advocating across the board that we apply the same standards as adults in society to college students. They’re not in high school anymore.

The college disciplining them does not violate their free speech.

I did not say it did. I said that I don’t think colleges should apply standards that are not applied to adults in the real world. And I noted that an actual “criminal” charge (which is not the same thing as college discipline) would not apply in the real world because of free speech issues. You are conflating two things.

woman with the Confederate flag earrings

This whole story is vile, but the fact that “Confederate flag earrings” exist is just shitty icing on the shitty cake.

I can’t imagine how I would react to someone wearing those earrings so causally but I think it would be hard for me not to show a reaction.

Aren’t most closet racists a bit more low key than that... Might as well just wear an “I’m awful” t-shirt.

No surprise. I have a mixed race friend who said that College Station is the only place he ever felt uncomfortable due to race.

As a Hispanic that has lived in many places in the U.S. My experience is that there are racists everywhere and Texas racist are assholes that are open about it and have no problem harassing you in the street because “it’s the Texas way” or something. Many people prefer an open racist. But I disliked having to deal with strangers telling me to speak English or calling me slurs in the supermarket. I think that hiding your racism is wrong but openly harrasing people in public places is worse than hiding your racism.

I just read a statement that said the white woman walked up to the black women to ask their opinion on her confederate flag earrings. Because you know, it’s about heritage, not hate..

Nah man, there are racist assholes here just like there are racist assholes all over this country. The Northeast has some of the most segregated cities in the country. Racism is not unique to Texas (or the South, for that matter) and it’s a disservice to everyone to pretend like it is.

uh, no, there’s a special flavor to the racism in Texas and the south that isn’t like the rest of the country.

Nah, Mike wouldn’t stand for that. He doesn’t like it when someone fucks with the reputation of his employer.

He’d have gone to their houses in the middle of the night and threatened their lives.

I know! When I was in college, my roommate’s campus job was to do the whole welcome wagon for prospective students thing. She did tours, etc, which meant that sometimes we’d have girls come and stay the night with us to “see what living in a dorm is like.” It was often a pain in the ass, since the room had to be spotless, but it was also a lot of fun. These kids were sooooooooo excited about finally seeing what college was like. Just bright-eyed and curious about everything. They’re about to be adults and see what this whole grown-up thing is all about! They’re so excited! You are a college student and therefore SUPER COOL! The though of seeing a group of prospective students and just completely crushing that kind of optimism and enthusiasm about the future is so, so sad to me. I hope it doesn’t sour the kids on what their college experiences could be like, and I hope they get accepted somewhere where they feel at home.
