well it sounds an awful lot like Bill Clinton and his problem.

Okay so the thing about this is that Bill Clinton actually did what he was accused of doing, so even if that’s not how the defense attorney meant that comment to be taken, its still the worst comparison he could have made if he actually wanted to win.

ETA Fuck Jian I hope his survivors get justice.

Yeah, I find it weird to compare the victims to Bill Clinton. Bill was the one under fire. I think he’s assuming these girls are in the wrong so... I don’t know. It’s a weird comparison.

Exactly! When I think of “Bill Clinton and his problem” I think of a young woman pressured into something by a man in a position of power and vilified for it.

like... mayyyybeeee not the best thing to say when you are representing someone who did the same thing.

Can someone who understands the nuances of the Canadian legal system give me the over/under on the odds of his conviction? With Holtzclaw convicted, Cosby finally reaping what he's sewn, I'm hoping for a hat-trick of abusive pieces of shit actually facing punishment. At the VERY least I would hope his career is over .

There’s a solid chance he’ll be found not guilty owing to reasonable doubt but he faces another trial later this year for conduct specifically while working at CBC so with any luck the prosecution learns from its mistakes here and strings him up in that one. Regardless, his professional career is about done.

He wont be convicted because just like America, we do not convict rapists. I speak from experience.

A friend of a friend was also shot this morning and is in ICU, her father fatally shot... because her ex boyfriend went crazy over her not wanting him.

Starting to feel a lot like America over here.

All judgments or opinions on Ghomeshi’s guilt or lack thereof, from a legal perspective this trial has been downright disastrous for the prosecution. He may be a scumbag but the reasonable doubt that has been sown pretty much demands a not-guilty finding.

My guess is that in an effort to be sensitive and respectful to the victims, they didn’t do their due diligence and sufficiently vet and prep them prior to testimony, and as a result, the defense actually managed to concoct a narrative that painted these victims as practically a cabal, first using their feminine wiles to win attention from Ghomeshi, and then conspiring to precipitate his downfall when he spurned them. It’s a really icky narrative they’ve sold the jury, one really more suited to MRA and Incel message boards than a court of law.

This entire article is upsetting, so I’m going to focus on how much I enjoyed the part where Scott Reid implied/pretty much just straight up said that Men’s Rights Activists are not part of the real world.

I work with a woman whose ex-husband worked in (Canadian) radio years ago and everyone always said “Ghomeshi was a bad date”. She knew from that industry for years that women should stay away from him. Is this how domestic abuse survivors are questioned? “Well you didn’t divorce him, you kept living with him so it’s your fault”? I’m so disgusted with the justice system right now even my hair hurts.

Thank you. Some of the women at my work were discussing the trial last week and one of them said something along the lines of “well, she got in touch with him after, so she must have liked [being choked]”.

The level of ignorance in that statement was just too much for me. I was going to make a similar point to yours but have worked with these people for long enough to know that it was pointless, so I sighed loudly and had to walk away.

Anna, there is no jury, just a judge. My hope is that the judge sees past all of the hoopla about the accusers lack of credibility and just looks at the bottom line; did they consent to the choking and beating?

Exactly. The defense lawyer kept bringing up behaviour of the witnesses before and after the alleged violent incidents which doesn’t really have much to do with the accusations of physical violence. I can’t believe that he doesn’t have to take the stand. The women have to defend what they did or said, but he doesn’t have to answer for anything. Seems skewed to his benefit. If he did not punch/hit/choke them, why not just say so. What am I missing here?

Every once and a while when I’m watching celebrity interviews on Youtube, I come across one by Ghomeshi. His radio voice always came across as creepy to me, but after this mess I can’t listen. His voice so revolting and slimy!
