Except religion has nothing to do with this. It’s all about male privilege, and speaking as a male, it’s embarrassing and stupid. Apparently, some of us men still haven't come out of the cave, mentally.

But aren’t there also a% of these that are in fact due to some twisted religious fuckery?

I don’t know about worse (it’s largely less painful and less dangerous) but Gloria Steinem is really the one who kicked that into gear and made it a huge point to link to. Near as I can tell male circumcision wasn’t really a big talking point until she got through with it (well since it became common in the 1800s at least).

This is horrible, as is the continued circumcision of boys. Both should be stopped so that everyone can grow up as nature intended. And I mean this sincerely. Stop chopping bits off of baby’s bits. It’s gross and unnecessary, no matter the gender.

I remember when my parents decided my two sisters were ripe for the cutting. I remember a gruesome looking woman (perhaps that’s retroactive superimposing on my part but oh well) coming to the door of our home in Abu Dhabi.

What followed were hours of my sisters (8 & 9 respectively) screaming whilst the people expected to protect them, holding them down. I remember my dad coming and going with a baby tub filled with clean water and then bloodied water. My sister (the second eldest) didn’t have it undone (the threads that hold the labia together) until she got married in 2004. She was cut in 1991.

Body modification of young girls (and boys) is just horrible and outdated.

I had it done to me when I was 12 and I still feel ashamed because I was old enough to have known better. My older sister who was 13 tried to stop it literally cried to my dad and i remember the way she screamed but yet my family made it seem like a blessing. I was so young and naive I went to my cousin who is a boy and boasted I had it done like him...I remember them tying a rope so i wouldn’t split, my mother couldn’t be in the room because it was too much blood. My aunties pretending they had their daughters done but they lied. My uncles shouting at my mother because she shouldn’t have done this because this is not part of being a Muslim. It’s all so fucked up. Now when I go to the hospital to get checked I always have to declare.luckily England has improved because they offer people to talk to. I just don’t want to yet.

The really horrifying part is that it is usually women doing this to each other. Through generations of brainwashing, the women actually believe this is how things should be. The men don’t even have to enforce it. It was done to their ancestors, it was done to them and so they do it to their daughters. No questions asked.

    Horrifying.

The men don’t even have to enforce it.

But they will refuse to marry a woman who hasn’t had it done.

You’re right about women carrying out/pressuring for the practice. But it’s because they want their daughters married off as quickly as possible, because it’s a much more dangerous situation for them to stay single.

Yes, the patriarchy makes assholes of us all, women included. It just manifests differently in different cultures.

Exactly. I work in public health and we all know our estimates are estimates, particularly in developing country settings; but to be this far off is frightening.

I’d recommend reading Waris Dirie’s Desert Children. (all her books, really)

She’s a former model from Somalia who gave up her career to work with the UN and then start her own foundation to raise awareness of the dangers of FGM.

People are commenting that this practice is misogynistic, religious or patriarchical. That may be, but I think in a lot of cases it’s deeply rooted in age-old cultural practices. Furthermore, it would be interesting to do a per country analysis of FGM as it relates to circumcision. I would bet they correlate.

Im not defending either, just pointing out there are a lot of facts that are unknown.

Deeply rooted, age-old, cultural practices can still be misogynistic, religious and/or patriarchal. I don’t think it’s imperialistic or colonialist to consider that all can be true at the same time.

What would you call cutting off a clitoris, labia and sewing the vaginal opening close to make a girl pure enough for the marriage bed if not misogynist, religious and patriarchal?
