In the sea of “Formation” takes that overflowed this weekend, Zandria Robinson’s was my absolute favorite:

Formation, is a different kind of resistance practice, one rooted in the epistemology of (and sometimes only visible/detectable to) folks on the margins of blackness. The political scientist Cathy Cohen talks about activism at these margins, the kind of deviance-as-resistance built and cultivated at the margins of respectable blackness. Formation, then, is a metaphor, a black feminist, black queer, and black queer feminist theory of community organizing and resistance. It is a recognition of one another at the blackness margins–woman, queer, genderqueer, trans, poor, disabled, undocumented, immigrant–before an overt action. For the black southern majorettes, across gender formulations, formation is the alignment, the stillness, the readying, the quiet, before the twerk, the turn-up, the (social) movement. To be successful, there must be coordination, the kind that choreographers and movement leaders do, the kind that black women organizers do in neighborhoods and organizations. To slay the violence of white supremacist heteropatriarchy, we must start, Beyoncé argues, with the proper formation. The proper formation is, she contends, made possible by the participation and leadership of a blackness on the margins.

Gotta love how Republicans rail against the dangers of the corrupt, overreaching tyrannical power of our government, but embrace the actual civil liberty-stomping representatives of which who are carrying the guns and badges in our neighborhoods.

Or how they hate public unions like poison, except of course for one of the largest in the nation, the police.

“Mental gymnastics” really doesn’t do justice to what it actually takes to be a Republican.

Don’t even have time for it. This was probably the best video of her career, the song’s lyrics are much deeper than the shallow mess people are painting them out to be, and there was absolutely nothing wrong with her SuperBowl performance, except for the fact that she KILLED it (and saved that fall! get it girl! as a former dancer I was holding my breath for a couple seconds there.)

Pay old white people like Doocy no mind on this matter.

      let’s have decent, wholesome entertainment.

Also CANNOT STAND when this critique comes up. You’re talking about an event centered around a sport in which large grown men run into each other at full speed frequently causing injury and head trauma, cheered on by cheerleaders wearing tight/revealing outfits, in a stadium full of drunk, belligerent hollering people (who often do and yesterday DID riot after the game), and you wanna talk about “being decent.” All due respect to the athletes and dancers though, this has nothing to do with them—it’s the hypocrisy of people who try to raise this argument.

GTFO with your “wholesome entertainment,” that’s racist-coded language in the same vein of words like “thug” and “ghetto.”

You should check out the always reasonable Breitbart’s coverage of this. You’d think Ice T was getting up on stage and dusting off “Cop Killer.”

You’re talking to middle America when you have the Super Bowl. So if you’re going to have entertainment, let’s have decent, wholesome entertainment

Thanks black people (/s), for being the reason we can’t have nice things.

Old White People Find Beyoncé’s Black Pride Distasteful

    /ftfy

I’d have crossed out the old, too, but I don’t want to fight with you guys any more than I have to. lol

That said, the song is about a minute-and-a-half too long. I felt like there was bees in my head after listening to the whole thing. It just drones, yo. On the other hand, that’s what may save the song. If you’re not really listening to it (and particularly if you don’t see the video), you may not even know what the fuck it’s about. You might hear “nego” and “baby hair” and that’s about it.

      You’re welcome.

I think that they brought it out of the grays to report/flag it. Whatever. It’d bother me more if the shitbag in question actually believed the shit they’re spouting, when the reality is closer to “I’m bored so I’ma go troll Gawker cuz libtards YOLO.”

I dunno. I watched that amaze-balls half-time with my 84 year old mom and dad. And they was INTO it. I mean really into it. My mom was all: “Can you help me download more music by that ‘Bounce’ girl. I want to take it to water aerobics on Tuesday!”

I do so appreciate Gawker doing posts like this. It’s nice to know what golden turds of wisdom my parents will share with me on our next visit. Looks like Beyonce’s back on the agenda. Nice to be prepared.

(My parents are lovely people who taught me to judge people by the content of their character and not the color of their skin, or sexual orientation, or whatever. But I’m convinced some kind of switch goes off in white people around age 80 that makes all things black scary.)

I don’t know if your parents are like mine (it sounds like it), but I’ve discovered there seems to be a list of people that I, as a representative of liberalism, shall be called upon to defend at any given moment. The list includes but is not limited entirely to: Beyonce, Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Al (and sometimes Tipper) Gore, “Bruce” Jenner, Hillary Clinton, and of course Barack Hussein Obama.

      Did I miss anyone?

For a lot of people (thinking of my family here) that talk was earnst but always meant to be purely hypothetical.

Obama in the WH was not something a lot of people were prepared for.

Seriously, Super Bowl XLI, 2007, best halftime show evah. That was some next-level shit.
