I think it is swell how the folks who support these deportations are also the ones who tell me all of our country’s problems are because of the degradation of the “family” unit. Neat.

So I moved really close to the border, right where I live I have see 2 things that are quite a shock. first a lot of US citizens live in the Mexican side, and second, the crop picking crowd is diminishing fast.

They cross the boder everyday before 4 am to go work the fields, this people is older than 40, their kids went to school and most have managed to finish higschool and being second and third generation they speak english so they work in retail or restaurants vs picking crops.
Since picking crops is awful and really bad paid, most people doing it barely scrap by to live in Mexico obviously their children don’t turn to this as a career so in 5 years more, what is already a problem for farmers (no having enough people to pick the crops) is going to be a full blown crisis.

Also the border town in the US side is wholly dependant on the income they make from Mexico (outlets here are huge!!) and border related activities.

When I see this is obvious to me that most people opossing to have a working migration system have just never spended a morning in a border town or with a farmer.

A lot of it has to do with political rhetoric which tends to be oversimplified (i.e. it’s much more of a rallying sound bite to rail against illegal immigration as opposed to doing that and moving for a better system that would enable the US to meet it’s labor needs). Another issue is many labor laws cut ag workers out meaning that the wages won’t go up to a level that would make anyone want to do it if they had another option.

Not that quite a few people don’t simply miss the issues. But those (in my opinion at least) aren’t usually the people in positions of power.

Yes, Ag workers are pretty f****ed up and there’s a lot of child and elder labor going on.

So what did she do? Go live with friends?

Yeah, I could look that up. What I want to know is what is put in place for those in a family who aren’t deported. Particularly minors.

It’s all well and good to get on the capitalist high horse, like some of the comments here, but let’s not forget these are actually people. Even brown people are more important than your taxes, sorry.

As far as I know from second hand experience, either to live with resident/citizen relatives or placed into the foster system.

Were it not enough to remind US citizens of the strong ethical reasons for supporting the end of these raids, it might be worth while to remember that many undocumented immigrants pay into social security without being able to benefit from it.

I know, it’s such a conservative wet dream to have people who pay into taxes who are generally excluded from benefits, yet it is conservatives who scream the loudest for draconian immigration laws!

Also a conservative dream: super cheap labor! They act like there’s no DEMAND for these workers, when CORPORATIONS CREATE THAT DEMAND. Ugh.

Some people think that they can make a distinction between those of us who are here with documents and those of us who don’t have them. Just let me be clear, if you are somehow trying to appeal to documented immigrants to join you in your hate towards documented immigrants you’ll fail. Even the documented immigrants that do not have any undocumented relatives know how shitty your immigration system is and how random it is to be the one with the documents. If you hate on one “type” of immigrant you are hating on all of us and we know it. So cut the BS and stop making distinctions. You are only kidding yourself

I don’t want to reply to those in the greys because I never know who is a troll. I just want to say nobody is advocating for 0 deportations. And I don’t know why but even among liberals seems to be ok to think of immigrants and immediately think of rapists. Seriously, we know it would be wrong to say: I think the police should not be brutalize blacks but what about black rapists? That would be fucked up. In the same way it is fucked up to immediately bring up rapists when talking about treating undocumented immigrants badly. Sure some of them will be rapists but believe me nobody is advocating not punishing rapists and that is NOT what this conversation is about at all!!!!

Notice the staunchly anti-’whatever’ crowd tends to see things in black and white. Discussion about ‘whatever’ issue is usually in extremes, there’s no in between. As in, either all illegals are deported or none are. Those are apparently the only options that reform supporters offer. I don’t know if it’s to make some point or if they really can’t see the middle ground. Either way it’s not productive.

I’m glad to see the issue getting a little more traction in the media. For all the beneficial things the Obama administration has done in these two terms, his record on immigration has been less than stellar.

I’m very ignorant about immigration issues (the only time I see it written about its either personal or politicians flaunting their racism), can someone direct me to information about the topic that isn’t Republican hate speech?
