Hey Jezzies, whatcha drinking? I’m having a North Peak Berserker Winter Imperial Stout. It’s quite good! Branching out and trying new stouts has been treating me well- I’ve yet to find one I don’t like. Then again, I do live fifteen minutes away from the largest craft beer selection in the city, so I have quite a lot to choose from.

My week has been going okay. I made delicious seven cheese bacon baked mac and cheese on Sunday with cavatappi pasta, and it was so good that I ended up giving some to my parents and brother, and made another batch on Wednesday, this time with eight cheeses. I put some crunched salt and pepper kettle chips on top because I’m a skinny fatty bobalatty, and it was divine. My class is still going quite well. I had to turn in an annotated bibliography, and it’s the first time I got a B in the class, but everything else has been As. We learned all about vaudeville this week! They even touched on Williams and Walker, a black blackface duo who dubbed themselves “two real coons”. While they were immensely popular, some people didn’t like them because they were, get this, actually African American and not white people in blackface. How fucked up is that? We learned about Eddie Cantor, who would be familiar to anyone who is a fan of the series “Boardwalk Empire”, and The Marx Brothers. (Groucho is one of my personal heroes.) We also learned about Florenz Ziegfield, who was basically the smutty version of P.T. Barnum. He had this chick named Anna Held who he claimed would take daily baths in milk, and he once charged people to come see her take one of her milk baths. When it was time for the bath, she came out and claimed the milk was spoiled and wouldn’t get in the tub, so he sued the milkman! It was a hoax, of course, and the milkman was in on it.

And now for something completely different, here’s a selection from Mindymoo’s Mixtape. It’s a song by the amazing and wonderful Electric Light Orchestra, from their first concept album, Eldorado.

Hey! I’m drinking fizzy water again tonight, but I had some really good beer from SingleSpeed Brewing earlier this week while I was visiting Iowa. It’s always nice to find a good microbrewery with friendly people while traveling.

The mac and cheese sounds amazing, too.

Not a damn thing. Prescribed opiates and alcohol are a no-no, so I will be frighteningly sober as I go out to pick up shame pizza and meringue supplies. World, fear me—i’m baking on painkillers!

You guys! My kitten came home! I love him desperately already. I opened my facebook and the first thing I saw was an essay by a blogger I followed who had to put her dog down. So now my heart is already broken. I actually don’t really like cats and I LOVE dogs, so I thought if I had a cat I wouldn’t get that attached. But apparently that was idiotic. Tell me about the first day you brought home your pet and how it wasn’t a big deal that they died 15 years later or whatever. In the meantime I’ll dig up some photos.

So... I’m heading out momentarily to my 10-year high school reunion. I swore I wouldn’t go, but I think curiosity and FOMO got the best of me. I’m feeling a little nervous/self-conscious about the fact that, unlike a huge chunk of my classmates, I don’t have a husband or a baby, or even a boyfriend. Intellectually, I’m aware that I’ve accomplished a lot in the last 10 years, and I’m incredibly proud of that — I worked hard in college and grad school to have an awesome career, I’ve gone on some epic trips, I have a great hobby that helps me give back to my community. I’m a Successful Human by most measures, except for this one. I hate that being single makes me feel like none of that matters when I see people from my past.

Oh well. I’m going to walk in with my head held high, aided by a fresh manicure and flawless red lipstick. And I will just remind myself that, exactly like in high school, everyone will be too busy worrying about their own insecurities to judge anyone else’s flaws. Then I will find my high school BFF, with whom I’ve been texting all day, and get drunk in the corner. Like the old days.

Tell me your high school reunion stories — the good, the bad, the shitshows!

Never went to mine. They didn’t really put together a proper event. Just some people met up at the beach. Which sounds okay except there was nothing to eat or anything so they just talked and took pictures and left.

Who organizes reunions normally? The tv and movie people make it look so...catered and DJed. :P Our school doesn’t do that. My 20 year is not too far off now. But I don’t want to go to the beach and not eat.

You should be very proud of yourself. If it helps, I have a husband and kids but I’ve done nothing else with my life so I tend to feel very inadequate in these settings. You won’t be the only one feeling that way.

My ten year reunion was back in 2011 and I skipped it. Most everybody I want to talk to from back then I’m friends with on FB and we all talk pretty regularly. Same with my wife as we met in high school and had more or less the same circle of friends. We just didn’t see any point in going. Well, that and my wife was pregnant at the time.

Jezzies, could use some input here: How do you cope with a partner who is reluctant to give up unhealthy habits? My amazing boyfriend, who I adore and hope to marry someday, smokes. Not a lot, but 1-2 cigarettes a day, always at night (he also drinks a bit too much, but one problem at a time here). He nods along when I lecture him about how incredibly unhealthy it is, but doesn’t seem to be doing anything to actually quit. And the thing that annoys me is, I don’t think it would even be that hard for him to stop—I think he’s more addicted to the ritual than anything else. (Also I find it incredibly gross, but I know that’s not particularly helpful to tell people with an addiction.)

I’m tired of arguing with him about it, and obviously he’s a grown up who can make his own choices. But it makes me kind of sad :-(

There is one thing and one thing only to do: You accept that you can’t control his behavior, and stop arguing with him about it. This is like trying to teach a pig to sing.

Having grown up around a lot of recovering alcoholics who also had other addictions to give up, YOU can’t really do anything.

      He knows it’s unhealthy.

      He knows it’s an addiction.

      He knows it bothers you.

He hasn’t stopped smoking. He may never.

The only thing you can do is decide how much it’s going to bother you. You’ve said you’re tired of arguing about it. But if he doesn’t give it up, is it something you’re going to keep bringing up to him? Is that healthy for your relationship? Is that healthy for you? Is his smoking something you can accept? Is it a deal breaker? There are things you can do for yourself, but you can’t make him quit. He’ll have to want to.

      I’m sorry. It is sad.

Catastrophe is already on the list, thank you!

They’re recommending Mozart in the Jungle pretty heavily, which is making me resist out of pure contrarianism. Like, Screw you, Amazon, I can pick things for myself! But maybe I should just TRY it...

    YOU GUYS YOU GUYS

I am super sad that there’s no more BCO because I have a Very Important Update. I wrote in back in June about Ferrari Guy, who parks at the Starbucks and sticks a “Ferrari Parking Only” sign in front of his car. Well, this week we managed to get a photo of him:

Do you see it? Do you see what’s wrong with this picture? Because I didn’t until I had a good look at it.

THAT’S A FUCKING MIATA WITH A FERRARI LOGO STUCK ON IT

Your friendly anthropologist here, living in the US South for fieldwork. I went to Walmart on my first ever solo mission this week, got very lost, and bought some pink hunting camo moccasin slippers.

Tonight one of my hosts has asked me if I want to go to Red Lobster, and obviously I said yes. What do you think, am I Murrica-ing right so far?
