I try not to judge other parents, cause parenting is hard. But if you put your kid in conversion therapy I judge you. You are a shit parent.

It’s very common for parents (of any religious or political background) to assume that their child’s sexuality is a sickness. My mother and father told me they’d rather me be in jail for murder than out on these streets twirling to Beyonce and sucking dick. Sighs all around.

That’s what happens when you love control more than your own children.

I’m a little surprised to find that it was ever covered by insurance.

Mammogram before 35, nope. Barbaric brainwash shaming, sure. Want some extra cash to get an egg cream after we berate and badger you about who you are? Sure. Have two. Bring a date. Opposite sex though...

Don't forget the debate about birth control being covered by insurance.

Kidnapping and torturing children is all good. They’re your property after all.

BUT DON’T YOU DARE HARM THAT ZYGOTE. THAT’S COMMUNAL PROPERTY.

Wait. This bogus therapy was available through insurance while birth control is still being debated? Mindblown.

I suspect many “unusual” things are available on insurance if you’re willing and able to pay the premiums on the platinum plated policy.

Before the Obama administration, the only “therapy” for autism that insurance would cover directly was ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis). ABA was developed by the SAME PEOPLE who developed what became known as “conversion therapy.”

These practices came out of two programs at UCLA in the mid-century. One was the Youth Autism Project, and the other was the Feminine Boy Project. They both used behavior modification techniques to make these deviant children appear “indistinguishable from their peers.” Both programs initially used rewards and “aversives,” i.e. punishment. For the autistic kids, aversives included not only slapping and yelling, but also electric shock (often administered by cattle prod).

We’re finally seeing the damage done by trying to “fix” LGBTQ kids through behaviorist “therapy.” My hope is that we can also start paying some attention to the equally fucked up practices that many autistic kids are still being subjected to.

ETA: The ACA was a huge boon to neurodiversity, because insurance now has to cover therapeutic and supportive approaches that are actually useful to autistics.

THIS SHIT WAS COVERED BY INSURANCE?

What the fuck - how is that possible. How are these ‘therapists’ board-certified in any way?

Anyone can call themselves a “therapist”. “Psychotherapists” are board certified.

This isn't outlawing, this is defunding. Fundamentalist parents will pay out of pocket for this. Look at the conversation camps some send their kids to. $10,000 a month.

WTF? Why isn’t this already the case? The people doing this therapy should be in jail.

That doesn’t sound like “outlawing” it. Outlawing would be better.

        That’s what I was thinking :/

Sounds like discouraging it, but still allowing wealthy people to torture their children or for poor people to go into debt to torture their children, as well as allowing these peddlers of torture to continue to take advantage of self-loathing and vulnerable people with the added bonus that now it will also make them broke and send them into debt.
