I get what Chris Rock is saying, but Kerry Washington or Gabrielle Union don’t need a man to speak for them.

No they don’t. But he’s totally within his rights to speak on this. And what he’s saying is 100% true. He’s being supportive and coming from a place of marginalization himself as a black person in our society. The idea that he should just keep quiet on this strikes me as really counter-productive. A black actor can talk about the struggle of other black actors, regardless of gender, and not have it somehow mean he’s taking over the entire conversation.

Miley Cyrus bought the house next door to Liam Hemsworth.

Can’t see that one turning out badly.

Never thought Miley would take relationship advice from Taylor Swift.

“Throw in Miley and her five dogs and things get messy.”

What is it lately with people being OK with dogs shitting all over the house? You see it on reality shows all the time, and even a couple of my friends report on regularly occurring dog messes (and their places smell like it, too.) In my experience, that was usually a sign of a problem with the person (too lazy to walk it or let it out on a regular basis) or the pet (some kind of health problem). Come on, people - either take on full responsibility or don’t get a dog to begin with.

Sadly, I think there is an uncomfortable percentage of dog havers who like them as cute accessories and not full-on living, breathing, eating, pissing, shitting, wonderful companions.

I don’t get that either. When I lived with a dog, we took him outside for a walk regularly to avoid messes.

Well that’s about 5 minutes of my life I’ll never get back. “Bulbous bottom”, “Pert posterior”. Is this typical “Daily Mail”?

Chyna’s floral body art was visible in her bikini, the colourful tattoos running down her flat stomach and snaking up her shapely thighs.

The stunning star opted for a glowing beauty look, with plenty of highlighter enhancing her killer cheekbones and nude lipstick emphasising her plump pout. She swished a long black wig across her shoulders as she raced up the beach, peering out from underneath the heavy fringe

Chris is speaking the truth. It seems to me he’s also subtlely talking about colorism toward actresses of African descent as well. Almost every “black” actress cast in movies/tv these days is light skinned/biracial/multi-racial. Hollywood really does not like dark skinned black women.

This. So much this. It never gets talked about in mainstream press. And even if it did......can you imagine a dark skinned black woman talking about that the way Amy Schumer talks about her weight? “Angry black woman” would get slapped on her so fast.

As a black woman this makes my head hurt. This is also one of many reasons that kept me out of acting when everyone said I’d be sooo good at it and encouraged me to try. Who was going to put ME in anything? I could see with my own eyes. My English is too good, I’m not chubby or sassy. Why bother. And even now, if you can get a job, they don’t pay you a damn. Teenage me was woke af and had NO time.

It’s sad and wrong that you were discouraged like that. As a former actress, let me tell you that yes, it was hard. But if you love the art, you love the art and you slowly claw your way up, like Kerry and Viola and the like. By the way: In regards to the “English is too good” comment, those actresses that you are seeing speak incorrect English or with certain accents usually don’t sound like that, either. They are...acting. Lol. One of the Blackist actress experience you can have is to be asked to do the lines “more black.” Sigh.

Yeah, nothing will kill your love of something faster then being told all the reasons you’re not going to be allowed to do it. And then everybody’s all “but you should, you’d be so good!” Well, yes, maybe, if I ever got cast, but I won’t be, is the point. Why waste years of your life butting your head against that wall?

Can we just agree that Hollywood essentially functions like a straight, white man’s little fantasy world. Where the men don’t have to become irrelevant with age and can be whoever they want, the black men can be the sidekicks, the white women (and some pale latina women) can be the girlfriends, the wives, and the props as long as they’re hot, the black women and asian actors of all genders don’t get to exist at all.
Essentially, it boils down to whether the white guy sitting on the money wants to be that character or fuck that character. If the answer to either is “no”, then they question why they should even exist in media at all.
The studio executives are the dragons sitting on the gold and that is the problem for everyone. They need ousting, only then will actresses of any race get fair opportunity and fair pay.

That is very true. Who will be the Bernie Sanders of the movie industry? “It’s a rigged system! And the best roles go to the top 1% of white men and white women! We need a cinematic revolution!”
