As we get into summer, I’m sure there’s going to be much discussion about how freaked out people of breeding age in the southern US should be, so I don’t want to get ahead of myself buuut... As a potential breeder person from Europe who is working in this southern US in 2016, may I ask, how freaked out should I be?

NB: My own unlikely exposure to Zika is not what is actually horrifying about this outbreak. The likelihood of me personally being affected by this is, I’m sure, negligible, and ultimately beside the point. I’m just a foreigner trying to understand the scope of things.

Maybe instead ask yourself, if you did get pregnant and you did get infected, what would you do and would you have a plan while in the US as the south is not a....good place for options. I'd be on bcp.

How long do women of child bearing age have to be worried about this? If we are infected with Zika now do we have to worry about future children? Or will it be sufficient protection? Or is it like the virus that causes chicken pox that can flare up with a compromised immune system and screw you over?

Not planning on procreating any time soon, but there’s no amount of DEET or picaridin that keeps mosquitoes away from me.

Think of Zika as being like Toxoplasmosis. It can only harm your fetus if you are infected with it during the pregnancy for the first time. Once your system has dealt with the virus and cleared it, you and all subsequent babies are fine.

I thought it couldn’t be cured, just treated? So does that mean pregnancy is safe once it’s been treated enough where there are no symptoms? I’m genuinely asking because this whole thing is a little anxiety inducing/ confusing.

So I’m pregnant and irrationally freaking out about this (I live in SF, so I don’t think it will even get wet/warm enough for mosquitos to breed until the kid is born) but in the interest of justifying my personal freak out... if someone gets infected on a visit to South America, comes back to SF, does the virus lie dormant and potentially get passed on if a mosquito bites them?

Or is that something we just don’t know yet? Most of the articles I can find are hypothetical which is not helping my anxiety.

Also I realize as I typed that out it seems really far fetched but my neighbors in South America right now we a quarter of the way there!

I have read that the type of mosquitos that are most common in the US are not the type that can transmit the virus. I hope that helps a little.

It can be passed from person to mosquito to person, yes. They’ve already seen documented cases of that.

That said, you don’t live in a climate where zika is likely to outbreak anytime soon (20 years into more global warming, on the other hand . . .) . I live on the gulf coast and am 15 weeks pregnant, so, heh, part of me is just resigned to not venturing outdoors after March.

I think the most important thing we can do is make sure to get a jump on Halloween this year and get our Sexy Zika costumes before they run out:

Given my proximity to South America (Trinidad is kissing cousins with Venezuela) it’s only a matter of time before we report our first case. Thankfully I have no intentions of reproducing. That said, the virus itself doesn’t sound like a lick of fun :(

My sis got dengue last year on her birthday and nursing her through that was easily one of the scariest thing I’ve ever had to do. I was really worried I might lose her at one point. Thankfully she recovered and intends to redo her 'dirty 30' this year to make up!

I’m going to Zika areas several times in the next couple of years. I’m also going to be trying to conceive. This is incredibly stressful. I guess the goal is to try to make sure I’m not in the first trimester while in these places—but you often don’t even know you are pregnant in the first trimester!

I still get asked questions re: Ebola at the ER (I was just there a couple months ago). Expect this to not be resolved any time soon.
