Inane commenter reduces interesting story to a highly abstracted and mediocre packet description. Mother prays for cancer.

Most newspapers survived the recession, though none are thriving. Many are still managing to eke out a profit, even, through drastic cost reductions (i.e., layoffs and sales of buildings). A wave of die-offs is probably coming, but there are still almost as many newspapers as there were 10 years ago.

There are few fewer newspaper reporters and editors, however.

It just seems like the concept of the 'newspaper' is a quaint reminder of times long gone. My local paper is nothing but a weak collection of ads and articles collected from USA Today, and while I don't live in a major metroplex, it's still a town of about 400,000.

Quick game: You’re in an elevator with Adelson, Trump and Shkreli. You have two bullets and that green stuff for old man’s hair which you see in a bathroom for old men or at a steakhouse, or both. What do you do? (Suicide is not allowed.)

Force Trump at gun point to strangle the other two and then drink the barbicide (think that’s the stuff you mean)? Then pawn the gun?

Why would you go insulting Palpatine like that? It’s not like the Jedi were doing a real bang up job of bringing order to the Galaxy.

If he had just bought the paper and shut it down, someone might’ve opened a new one to replace it, and locals may have supported it. By committing newspaper murder by a thousand cuts, he gets to inflict newspaper fatigue on the audience so they will be more likely to dismiss all need sources that might do the work needed to dig out real stories.

I’ve wondered about that. I’m not sure what the financial situation of the Review Journal was prior to Adelson buying it, but would a new newspaper actually open up in a city the size of Vegas?

I guess a city the size of Vegas might be able to economically support a paper, especially one not bogged down by the sorts of long term institutional costs that tend to crop up for long standing businesses, but given how hard it is to make it in the industry, I’m not sure.

I guess any new business would also have an easier time taking advantage of an online news environment maybe though.

I know everyone likes to talk about the Koch brothers and shady dealings, and the octopus-like creature their finances have created. But honestly, I wish this motherfucker had the sun shone on his wrinkly ground beef ass a whole lot more. He is shady as fuck.

That’s precisely why he bought the paper and why Murdoch, Koch, etc. are buying up papers. You can quash stories about you that you don’t like and you can have reporters attack your enemies. That democratic mayor that wants to impose higher drinking water standards? Let’s go after him.

Oh, right. I forgot that the first rule of journalism is to selectively publish and/or remove information expressly to promote a political agenda and/or preserve undisclosed and/or attempted concealment of conflicts of interest.

In my defense, though, that one is hard to remember.

I know I probably disagree with this guy on everything, but nuance with stuff like this makes me nervous. This is the sort of post that ends up on White Supremacist sites as evidence of evil jews manipulating the news media.

Seriously. I'm not Jewish but have spent my entire life either living in primarily Jewish neighborhoods or having close connections with Jewish people. Historically it has been a very fine line that is easily crossed and leads to cleansing. It's one of the creepier patterns in human history.

Perhaps it was his insistence that movable type be re-introduced into the daily publication.
