All jokes aside, there is a line of legal reasoning that excludes employers from responsibility for when their employees do horseshit like this, because their shenanigans aren’t within the scope of their employment. No one seems to ask the next question, which is, “Okay, but if that’s true, doesn’t that mean that no employer is ever responsible for their employee’s fuckery?” Which doesn’t seem right, does it? AND YET HERE WE ARE. It makes me hulk out with rage.

But isn’t the answer to that “next question” that an employer is responsible for things an employee does within the scope of their employment? I mean, you know, when the cops have been shooting or otherwise killing people on-duty then some victims have received wrongful death settlements.

I mean, it’s not all or nothing right? Employers have to be liable for some actions of their employees but obviously not all. I think it’s pretty fair, especially when we’re talking about millions of dollars of public money, to establish pretty specifically if the city was reasonably negligent in someway here.

“The NYPD does not have an obligation to train officers not to commit sexual assault because it is an obvious criminal act.”

Hmmm...but they will retrain their officers not to choke someone to death (another obvious criminal act).

Yeah, but that’s about how to perform their jobs correctly. I doubt they have a “Also, don’t strangle delivery people and hide their bodies in your freezer” seminar.

Why is the concept of “don’t do bad things to other people” so hard to grasp for a lot of humanity? I’m totally serious. We shouldn’t have to “train” officers or anyone else to act in a responsible manner. I hate the world.

. She also claims that Skorzewski told her that she was his “favorite victim” and that what he was doing couldn’t “leave this room.”

and he is still a cop???

It's kind of incredible isn't it? Like the line for what cops feel they can beat and arrest you for is smaller than ever but it seems like it's almost impossible to hold a cop accountable

Let me get this straight. They flew to Seattle to interview the rape victim - about her rape. But they weren’t “acting under the color of the law” and didn’t “invoke the authority of the NYPD”. But again, they were there TO INTERVIEW HER ABOUT HER RAPE. You have GOT to be fucking kidding me. I’ve been on the internet for all of 10 minutes and I am already done for the day. JFC.

I’m still trying to figure out how we go from “interviewing a victim about a crime” to “ten-hour booze fest with said victim.” Like, do we wrap up the interview with something like, “Thanks for your cooperation, ma’am. Wanna hang out?”

Murder is an obviously illegal act, too, but I’m of the understanding that police departments pay good money to train police officers on weapon safety and other ways to avoid murder (whether it takes hold is a whole different issue).

Doesn’t matter how obvious it is; it’s a good idea to take preventive measures.

My question is, why would any officer fly to Seattle to interview a rape victim? How does that happen? Not over the phone? Not when she reported it the first time? Can't get interviewed by a Seattle officer? It seems like how would that spending be approved to begin with? Is that normal?

My guess is because it was NYPD SVU case, and victim had since moved or was otherwise no longer in the place where the crime occured, lots of situations require/prefer the actual investigatory team do the investigating, even if that means travel.
