I dunno which site he founded is worse: Bustle or Bleacher Report.

(Yes, he unleashed that garbage onto us as well.)

    *** Trigger Warning: Old-man Rant ***

Honestly, this seems perfectly in line with journalism’s downward slide into increasingly masturbatory content created by a generation of writers who are equal parts self-obsessed and self-important.

I think you’re putting too much blame on the authors and not enough on the site or the fact enough people read them to make it profitable.

It would seem to me that if Bustle’s interest in these kind of stories is well known, they could periodically send out a list something like the questionnaire to all writers saying, more or less, “remember: we’re interested in publishing personal pieces by our staff on these kinds of issues. If you feel like you have something you’re willing/ready to share, please pitch it to me at any time!” That seems better to me than the prospect of an employer reaching out to say “You know, medrawt, I notice that although you’ve mentioned depression in an offhand way, you’ve never actually written a piece specifically focusing on your experience with depression. I think our readers would be really interested in hearing about that through your voice. Also, we’ve noticed that you never drink, but you’ve never written about why. I see you didn’t check the box about alcoholism, which is fine, but if you ARE in recovery, it would be wonderful to read about it!”

Or, you know, like they did back in the day, reporters could go out and interview people and you know, report. Boom, content obtained.

You just KNOW that over at xojane and $cientology they’re smacking their foreheads and going “Why didn’t WE think of that?!?!?!”

Also, back in the day Vice used to essentially run newbies through a 4D questionnaire by partying with them and judging them by their choices. So do some old-school places, still, but it’s more you DON’T want to be the E connection at the party than you DO.

So they want you to party, but not supply any of the party drugs? Like they want you to be able to get down, but not be out of control or something? Please elaborate on this Vice thing.

Vice? yes, they want you to party but not to the extent of inconveniencing them with on-site raids, negative press, etc. The old school places? They want you to be at parties, but not to visibly “party.” According to one study, a woman can’t even have two glasses of wine over a dinner without being eliminated as a job candidate at some places.

Believe me, I went to a Catholic school and when we had class-Confession days the priests and students were very industrial.

        A sample

Me: Bless me father, for I have sinned, uh...(insert shit)

Father: Find a way to better yourself, two Hail Marys and three Our Fathers, I absolve you of your sins, go now and sin no more, but let me flip the light switch off first.

(all of this was spoken very quickly, taking roughly three minutes)

Some of these questions seem like very bad questions for a company to know because it would open them up to more accusations.

For instance, if you fired five people for normal payroll reasons and three of them figured out they all answered “Yes, I had an abortion” on their survey, then all of a sudden they may have an opening to sue you.

Some things it’s probably better to not know about your employees.

As a human and an artist and a person who still believes people are driven to create because they *must* and then people consume art in whatever fashion because it makes life better, this article is sincerely the most depressing thing I have read in a while. How Ayn Randian of Bustle (or any place) to blindly assign articles in this fashion. Where is the passion? Where is the desire to write in order to be better, do better, make someone see things differently? I understand the need to make money, but surely there must be a better way? This is clinical. Quite literally this reads like a form filled out in the waiting room of a doctor’s office, a practice already suspect. Going to pour a whiskey and talk my daughter through her grammar homework. She is in 1st grade and jazzed about writing a paragraph, no questionnaire required.

Vis: “where is the passion to do better, be better,” etc. Gack. Really? Is this a joke? Step off.

Problem is the US tax code. Aspiring young female journos are fucked by structure of system. Too effing tired. You connect the dots. And don’t vote for Clinton.

Journalism doesn’t live and die by these types of blogs. Newspapers do still exist. Magazines do still exist. Write the content you want. It’s not a joke - it’s not giving in to the notion that because I have a vagina and a story that involves violence towards it that I should use it for page views and monetary gain. I will keep my ideals and my integrity.
