There is so much more to this story. Yooge controversy about the Hasidim illegally moving in and trying to take over control of the town. This is not a simple issue of voter fraud.

I swear, this town’s problems seem like a competition to see who can be the biggest asshole.

Anti-Hasidic attitudes are common in the Catskills because of towns like Kiryas Joel, about 25 miles from Bloomingburg. Since the families are huge, and the women stop working once they have kids it has an incredibly high percentage of residents on public assistance.

What’s their voting power in local elections? Can they vote in both Brooklyn and in Sullivan County? I’m from the other side in Ulster County and my neighbors are people who go back generations.

There can be a lot of tensions between other Jewish people and Hasids.

Ah. Probably similar to the tensions between Catholics and Catholics Who Go To Church.

They should have just changed the voting day to a Friday night after sundown. Problem solved.

ya no worries, Hassidic Jews would found something in Torah that would let them vote on Friday night after Sunset, its all depending on your interpretation.

As a secular American Jew I can totally understand why a municipality would want to prevent Satmars from getting a foothold. Google Kiryas Joel.

Satmars are a pretty terrible group. There are other hasidim that just want to mind their own businesses and worship their god, but the Satmars are nasty assholes who consider everyone else - including other Jews - as beneath them and ripe for scamming.

I would need more to go on than this skimpy Post article before I yell antisemitism. Antisemitism and anti-cult are two separate things. The Hasids are pretty notorious for busing in their communities to vote for one candidate - a candidate that has promised to keep their creepy communities whole and away from things like visits from social services.

I say this as a secular Jew.

How could a town with such a cute name do something so un-cute? This certainly doesn’t help break unfair bad cat stereotypes.

Serious question. Is it cat skills or cats kills? Big difference in the cute factor.

Depending on your cat's temperment, it can easily be either.

The problem is that the history of the Hasids in some of these towns is there is a mass migration, an ultimate capitulation of the governance to Hasidic interests, and the now-minority groups who are unaffiliated with them are made to suffer, and told in explicit terms to move out if they don’t like it. East Ramapo NY is a particularly egregious example.
