The real scandal was how he was able to get away with this for so long and the fact that it usually takes multiple victims before these types of allegations are taken seriously.

It’s funny how the perceived value of a lucrative entertainer is clearly still higher than women’s basic human rights. “But he’s a rare talent!!” “But he attacked me!” “Well...?” *shrugs*

I’m glad. I hope that the women he abused and terrorized get justice. And I really have to hand it to Lucy DeCoutere, aka Lucy from Trailer Park Boys. She spoke out about his abuse of her when this story broke and went public, and she went to the police about it. She’s a kickass lady, and she encouraged other victims to come forward and speak with detectives.

Yep, he did that to Lucy. I follow the TPB guys on Twitter and Facebook, and they were all putting out statements of love and support for her when the news broke.

Section 246(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada indicates it is an indictable offence to attempt “to choke, suffocate or strangle another person” in a bid “to render another person insensible, unconscious or incapable of resistance” for the purpose of committing an indictable offence.

Russell Silverstein, a criminal defence lawyer from Toronto, said the charge can be laid in relation to any number of criminal offences.

“The allegation here, no doubt, is that Mr. Ghomeshi choked his victims with a view to perpetrating the sexual assaults against them,” he told CBC News Network on Wednesday.

“One can be guilty of choking to commit any criminal offence, but in this case, I expect it’s in relation to the sexual assault charges that he faces that are the other four counts.”

It’s not a bad option to have on the books, frankly. Good for compounding sentences for particularly heinous pieces of shit.

Also good because choking is a red flag for escalating violence. In domestic violence screenings, choking is considered a strong risk factor for future lethal violence.

Yes, but this seems to have been in a work environment. And if it was an issue of consent, wouldn’t it be worded weren’t asked if they wanted to be choked? I mean, if you did want to be choked, warned wouldn’t really be the word, would it?

It’s odd that I’ve heard basically nothing about the trial. Of course, I’m on the west coast... so maybe not. Probably more newsworthy in Toronto. I’m happy this is finally in trial.
