If every poor person launched an anti-poverty group and raised money for it, there wouldn’t be any more poverty. I can’t understand why the poor are not pulling out their Macbooks right now and creating web pages and filing the necessary forms to start their own influence group. It’s almost like they prefer to be poor.

You complicate things unnecessarily, Dew. There is no need for Macbooks or web forms or U2 or PayPal. Gratitude for what you have, not a misplaced obsession with what you are lacking, is the antidote to ‘poverty.’ The Brothers could save themselves a cool 15 million if they just helped alleviate the subjective ‘perception’ of ‘poverty.’

You falsely presume the Democrats want to reduce or eliminate poverty. It is no accident that the most impoverished jurisdictions have been Democrat-controlled for decades and that the Democrats want to increase ILLEGAL immigration eventhough, as even Bernie notes, it suppresses wages on the low end.

Where did Nolan mention Democrats, and why didn’t somebody tell me that Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana are no longer run by Republicans?

To be fair to the Koch brothers, they don’t mean anti-poverty in the way that you and I understand the term. They will spend $15M buying lobbyists, congress and laws with which to fight the poor.

      So, $15m for drones?

Why? They could get the Oregon militia group to do it for a couple of sandwiches and a case of Coors Light.

I wonder if this group will finally be able to answer the question that has flummoxxed rich people like the Koch brothers and Mitt Romney for years:

Why don’t poor people just buy more money?

Or at least get an advance on their trust fund. I understand there could be negative tax consequences, but that seems (marginally) better than taking handouts.

Right? It really is a perplexing conundrum. Hopefully this new group will shed some light on why the poors just don’t use money to get more money.

$15 million? You mean their walking-around money they could take care of in one fucking check? Fuck the Duke brothers.

If I taught science classes to kids, and it made more kids want to be scientists, that means I am pro-science, right? Would you say I am hostile to science? NO! NAY, NEVER!

Yet, the Koch Brothers want to create more poor people, and you describe them as “hostile” to poor people. Just doesn’t make sense to me.

I’m convinced the only reason the Koch’s or anyone like does anything charitable is for the tax write-off, and to support their stupid argument that “without govt entitlement programs, charities will take care of the poor.”

I’m also halfway through “Dark Money” by Jane Mayers, so that, and it's true, is prolly the reason why.

“Dark Money” is a really depressing book.

          We are so screwed.

“social entrepreneurs” who are successfully tackling problems such as drug addiction in poor neighborhoods with resources, such as accounting expertise from a local business or access to lower-interest bank loans.

I see somewhat of a disconnect here
