One step. BUT THIS SHIT PISSES ME OFF. As a professional dancer myself, NO ONE WANTS TO PAY YOU. It’s so frustrating especially bc sports players make millions. Cheerleading and dance are a SPORT and actually have just as many injuries (if not more) than football. UGHHHHHHH-who has an ativan?

Cheerleaders deserve a fair wage. This should be indisputable (but sadly, is not).
However, it is hardly reasonable to argue cheerleaders deserve the same salary as the athlete’s whose game they supplement.

When a band opens for Springsteen, they’re not getting the same cut as the Boss.

Right but those athletes make that money because there is a billion dollar business around the entertainment they themselves provide and billion dollar TV contracts to show it to the entire country. There doesn’t appear to be that demand for dancers or the pay would be higher.

Uh oh, here come the assholes who think cheerleaders should only be paid in experience or some such right-wing twaddle.

Nono, you’re mistaken; it’s not that they should be paid in experience. It’s that they are supposed to be grateful to be in the presence of wealthy professional athletes who might deign to let them be glorified prostitutes if they’re especially good at cheerleading.

I also loved the argument that these women shouldn’t complain and should actually be grateful because they get to hang around rich guys who may bestow trinkets upon them, or — the ultimate cheerleader ambition — marry them (because why else would anyone be a cheerleader, right?).

These poor women can’t seem to catch a break; they’ve already seen their settlement get reduced by $1,000 between the headline and the first sentence of the post!

By the time they get a check it'll be down to $12.00 and a gift certificate for a free side at Olive Garden!

Since you posted this comment, it’s actually been slashed to $6.32 and a free basket of breadsticks with purchase of an entree.

NFL “cheerleaders” aren’t even real cheerleaders. They don’t follow the action, direct appropriate cheers or do any sort of routines that involve talent. They writhe, wiggle and shimmy, that’s it. They exist to comfort NFL fans lest they start to wonder why they’re so emotionally attached to large burly men in spandex tights. If NFL cheerleaders vanished tomorrow, who would really notice or care?

That said, they obviously merit more than the hilariously lowball pay they receive, especially given how they work for massively profitable businesses.

Not! I have worked at numerous events with the Minnesota Vikings cheerleaders and those gals can really strut. Wherever they are no one can take their eyes off them. I hate football and cheerleader nonsense but come on.

The franchise is based around the actual sport of football. Not a 3 minute sideshow.

Meanwhile, every player on the practice squad gets $6,600. Every week.

I doubt this will convince other teams to treat cheerleaders better.

      I don’t get these responses.
It’s not the same job. Why SHOULD they receive the same pay.

Sorry to burst your bubble...but no one goes to Jets games to watch the cheerleaders. They provide a better fan experience, and all pro cheerleaders deserve much Much MUCH higher pay than they currently receive. But stop with these arguments that cheerleaders deserve the same salary as the people on the actual team fans pay to watch.

I am going to give you the benefit of the doubt and not assume you are deliberately being dense. The important sentence is the second one, the first is just for comparison. $324,000 is a rounding error to an NFL team. they are one of 32 entities splitting up $9,000,000,000! Assuming equal split of revenues, it is approximately one tenth of one percent.

This costs them nothing. They pay more for...just about everything. This settlement will not make other NFL teams sit up and say “We better treat our cheerleaders fairly or we will face financial ruin.” This settlement will make other NFL teams say “Hey, we can treat those young women like garbage and even if we get sued and lose, it costs us nothing.”
