In the US, any great idea is already adopted by some other country. We will continue to use our shit infrastructure until the day it implodes and consumes our souls for the great Capitalist God.

Oh, awesome. That way, if someone on the train reeks of vomit, piss, shit or a general unfamiliarity with bathing, instead of the smell being compartmentalized in a single avoidable car, the whole train can get a big whiff. The same goes for evangelical shouting, nonsensical ravings, loud-as-fuck panhandling, and every other kind of noise pollution that only lasts for the duration of a station-to-station interval under the current system.

    Super. Can’t wait for that.

But think of the time saving. That crazy preacherman can now call 4 times the number of women whores at once. He’ll be able to spread the good word so much more!

Jeezus, it’s a grim picture you guys paint of the New York subways. ‘Way to bolster tourism. I’ve only been on them a few times whilst visiting but aside from the piss smell in the stations, I can’t complain about the experience. ‘Guess you have to live there to get the full experience.

This is probably great for evacuating in an emergency/preventing cars from getting overcrowded while others are empty, but what about when someone takes a shit in a car (inevitable), leaves a dead shark in a car (happened) or an unfortunate-smelling person takes up residence in one (you know what I’m talking about)? Will the entire subway be filled with foul odors?!

    Serious issue.

The New York subway system sounds like hell. How is it a system used by a similar demographic of people and about the same number of people as the London Underground be so so much worse?

Lack of/management of funds. Years of prioritizing highways/bridges/all automobile infrastructure over mass transit has taken a significant toll on the system.

Also, from a bit of googling, I see that the cheapest London Metro ticket is 2.40 pounds, only traveling within one zone (and increase from there). The NYC system is a flat $2.75 (a bit less than 2 pounds), no matter how far you go. That does make a difference.

I love how you can tell who actually rides the subway based on the comments. This was literally my first thought when I saw the picture.

So now it only takes one person to smell up the entire train. Compartmentalization, both mental and physical, have advantages on the NYC subway.

So long as they still have the poles for those limber young fellas to come in and dance improbably on, then hang upside down, demanding you fill a cap with dollar bills, we’ll be all right.

    Tangential-

How can we actually enact change at the MTA? With fares going up and delays INCREASING there has to be accountability. What can be done to actually make an impact? The lines have become increasingly worse, and there’s no end/plan in sight. Thinking about running an experiment on my commute to get some data on how often I can expect to have delays/horrible service...

I read about the recent delays. A LOT are caused by garbage on the tracks, and the stations are cleaned something like 90% less than they should be. But they’ve got a good excuse for some of the delays: they’re STILL fixing Sandy damage - the L is going to be mostly shut down for a few years, starting soon, because its river tunnel needs major repair. They’re also working on two new expansions, which will be great for the long-term but contribute to delays for now - the 2nd avenue line, and the 7 is being extended to run down 11th avenue, between 42 and 14 IIRC. And on the plus side, G trains are going to start running with a normal number of cars, so no more racing to the middle of the platform!

Thanks for that. The garbage fires causing delays I had read about as well. I think I saw a report that says to fix everything it would take over 50 years. That is just mind boggling. The internet hasn’t even been around that long. L train down for years? Can’t finish the 2nd ave extension? CONSTANT track breakages/issues causing rush hour delays (looking at you queens E/F...)

Depressing to say the least because it seems as though there is nothing we can do.

Ah, the good old days when the urine challenged people of New York could step between the cars instead of just pissing in the middle as they do now.
