Egypt is an especially troubling case when it comes to trying to figure out what some of the failures of the Arab Spring mean.

In my opinion, it is the strongest evidence to come out of the Arab Spring for the notion that democracy/representational government simply doesn’t work in all cultures.

That’s a statement made out of ignorance. Egypt never had a functioning democracy post 25 January 2011.

That is sort of my point, but it also ignores the fact that Egypt did in fact hold elections, and they elected a government that turned around and effectively declared itself above the law.

They said it was only until a Constitution was written, but the problem with declarations like the one Morsi made is that when it comes time to give up powers such as the ones he gave himself, human beings, religious or not, tend to be pretty resistant to doing so.

Eh, you should limit your prison blog du jour to this egyptian shithole.

One thing american prisons don’t do is rob assholes of their right to speak.

Just the means to get it heard, even if it hasn’t taken the ability to form the thought first. But sure, we leave them the right to speak, and only that.

Is THAT what happened to Sarah Palin? She’s been robbed of words for a long time.

It’s the endless repetition that does it: days upon days. It all begins to melt together - time starts to go by faster, like the whole exterior world has gone into hyper-speed. You start to feel an ache where that passion used to be, and you wonder to yourself: am I ever gonna find it again?

The state of journalism is worse than I thought: Blogging is preferable to prison?
