According to the father of one of the victims, The two people that were reportedly killed first were allegedly the shooter’s own siblings whom he shot in their home, he then went to the school and proceeded to shoot more people, killing two more, at least one of them a teacher, and injuring several more. The attack was reported conducted with a shotgun. This is a terrible tragedy not just for la loche, and the Athabaskan region, where communities are very small, very remote, and extraordinarily close knit— with many in the communities and surrounding areas bearing familial ties to one another, but to all Canadians— for whom this event marks a dark realization that no place is safe from the dark realities of today’s world

The second largest mass shooting in our history.

This is entirely on Harper’s hands, for pushing Americanized culture and economic bullshit on us and stripping remote communities of funding and access to basic services.

This is a community of 2,600, with 900 children in the school. No one is unaffected.

It’s true: we’re not so different. On the other hand, we’re not seeing this kind of thing every month.

      It’s still a far cry from American gun culture up here. For the most part Canadians are very pro- gun control. For example, when our former prime minister Harper said the following;

“My wife’s from a rural area. Gun ownership wasn’t just for the farm. It was also for a certain level of security when you’re a ways from immediate police assistance,” Harper said.

He was roundly criticized for inciting vigilantism, and had to walk back his remarks. People do NOT want anyone shooting anyone else, for any reason. Rifles are fine to keep the coyotes away, that’s it.

For fucks sake. It isn’t gun laws its the people. Canadians just have the sense not to kill one another.

If we took ALL the guns from the US to Canada and gave them away, Canadians would take what they need, sell the vast majority back to us and spend the money on beer and hockey tickets.

Maybe... Not to sound simplistic but when you have a country that was founded on revolution - which is, let’s be honest, violence - and it is glorified in so many facets of their culture up to and including their anthem, maybe it’s just something that gets ingrained in the national psyche. So when someone wrongs you in the States, your first thought is vengeance, and what better tool to use than a gun? Whereas here in Canada if someone wrongs you, you yell at them, get drunk, and forget what the hell the argument was about the next day.

Huge oversimplification obviously, but if you polish it up I wouldn’t bet against it having more than a few kernels of truth.

It’s not that much of an oversimplification. So many parts of what is unique to American culture (especially when placed in contrast with Canadian culture) can be traced back to the Revolutionary War period. Americans got their independence because they didn’t want to pay taxes so they dressed up like racist stereotypes of Native Americans and dumped a bunch of stuff in the ocean, then they all got their guns together and shot people until they’d listen. Canadians got their independence (in the sense of repatriating the constitution) through centuries of gradual negotiation, culminating in the Queen and the first Trudeau signing a document together (even despite his dancing).

This community has a suicide rate that’s triple the provincial average, and the province has the highest suicide rate in Canada.

I feel like that may be a more worthwhile discussion instead of the comparison between American and Canadian gun laws. There is a lot of pain in that community which Canadians need to address. This was such an awful event, and I hate that instead of trying to help a grieving community we are busy debating gun control.

The highest suicide rate in Canada? Last I checked Saskatchewan was middle-of-the-pack.

Nunavut has a suicide rate that is more than five times that of the second highest province/territory - NWT.

My heart goes out to the family of those people truly.

Now; four people and the shooter was not an Arab or Latino so Fox News wont even bother covering it.

I like the fact that the shooter’s name, face, family isn’t being plastered all over 24/7.
Note to the mainstream media: “Stop making idol worship of mass murderers.”
